PSALM 39
The Futility of Life.
For the music director, for [fn]Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.
1 I said H559, “I will keep H8104 watch H8104 over H8104 my ways H1870
So that I do not sin H2398 with my tongue H3956;
I will keep H8104 watch H8104 over H8104 my mouth H6310 as with a muzzle H4269
While H5750 the wicked H7563 are in my presence H5048.”
2 I was H481 mute H481 [fn]and silent H1747,
I [fn]refused to say H2814 even something good H2896,
And my pain H3511 was stirred H5916 up H5916.
3 My heart H3820 was H2552 hot H2552 within H7130 me,
While I was musing H1901 the fire H784 burned H1197;
Then I spoke H1696 with my tongue H3956:
4 “LORD H3068, let me know H3045 my end H7093,
And what H4100 is the extent H4060 of my days H3117;
Let me know H3045 how H4100 transient H2310 I am.
5 “Behold H2009, You have made H5414 my days H3117 like [fn]hand H2947 widths H2947,
And my lifetime H2465 as nothing H369 in Your sight H5048;
Certainly H389 all H3605 mankind H120 standing H5324 is [fn]a mere H3605 breath H1892. Selah H5542
6 “Certainly H389 every H376 person H376 walks H1980 around H1980 as [fn]a fleeting H6754 shadow H6754;
They certainly H389 make H1993 an H1993 uproar H1993 for nothing H1892;
He amasses H6651 riches and does not know H3045 who H4310 will gather H622 them.
7 “And now H6258, Lord H136, for what H4100 do I wait H6960?
My hope H8431 is in You.
8 “Save H5337 me from all H3605 my wrongdoings H6588;
Do not make H7760 me an object of reproach H2781 for the foolish H5036.
9 “I have become H481 mute H481, I do not open H6605 my mouth H6310,
Because H3588 it is You who have done H6213 it.
10 “Remove H5493 Your plague H5061 from me;
Because H4480 of the opposition H8409 of Your hand H3027 I am [fn]perishing H3615.
11 “With rebukes H8433 You punish H3256 a person H376 for wrongdoing H5771;
You consume H4529 like a moth H6211 what is precious H2530 to him;
Certainly H389 all H3605 mankind H120 is mere H1892 breath H1892! Selah H5542
12 “Hear H8085 my prayer H8605, LORD H3068, and listen H238 to my cry H7775 for H7775 help H7775;
Do not be H2790 silent H2790 to my tears H1832;
For I am a stranger H1616 with You,
One H8453 who H8453 lives H8453 abroad H8453, like all H3605 my fathers H1.
13 “Turn H8159 Your eyes H8159 away H8159 from me, that I may become H1082 cheerful H1082 again
