On Life and Conduct

1 When ^H3588 you sit ^H3427 down ^H3427 to dine ^H3898 with a ruler ^H4910,

Consider ^H995 carefully ^H995 [fn]what ^H834 is before ^H6440 you,

2 And put ^H7760 a knife ^H7915 to your throat ^H3930

If ^H518 you are a person ^H1167 of great appetite ^H5315.

3 Do not desire ^H183 his delicacies ^H4303,

For it is deceptive ^H3577 food ^H3899.

4 Do not weary ^H3021 yourself to gain ^H6238 wealth ^H6238;

[fn]Stop ^H2308 dwelling ^H998 on it.

5 [fn]When you set ^H5774 your eyes ^H5869 on it, it is ^H369 gone ^H369.

For wealth certainly ^H6213 makes ^H6213 itself wings ^H3671

Like an eagle ^H5404 that flies ^H5774 toward the heavens ^H8064.

6 Do not eat ^H3898 the bread ^H3899 of [fn]a selfish ^H7451 H5869 person ^H7451;

Or desire ^H183 his delicacies ^H4303;

7 For as he [fn]thinks ^H8176 within himself ^H5315, so ^H3651 he is.

He says ^H559 to you, “Eat ^H398 and drink ^H8354!”

But his heart ^H3820 is not with you.

10 Do not move ^H5472 the ancient ^H5769 boundary ^H1366

Or go ^H935 into the fields ^H7704 of the fatherless ^H3490,

11 For their Redeemer ^H1350 is strong ^H2389;

He will plead ^H7378 their case ^H7379 against ^H854 you.

12 Apply ^H935 your heart ^H3820 to discipline ^H4148,

And your ears ^H241 to words ^H561 of knowledge ^H1847.

13 Do not withhold ^H4513 discipline ^H4148 from a child ^H5288;

Though ^H3588 you strike ^H5221 him with the rod ^H7626, he will not die ^H4191.

14 You shall strike ^H5221 him with the rod ^H7626

And rescue ^H5337 his soul ^H5315 from Sheol ^H7585.

My own heart ^H3820 also ^H1571 will be ^H8055 glad ^H8055,

21 For the heavy ^H5433 drinker ^H5433 and the glutton ^H2151 will come ^H3423 to poverty ^H3423,

And drowsiness ^H5124 will clothe ^H3847 one with rags ^H7168.

22 Listen ^H8085 to your father ^H1, who fathered ^H3205 you,

And do not despise ^H936 your mother ^H517 when ^H3588 she is ^H2204 old ^H2204.

23 Buy ^H7069 truth ^H571, and do not sell ^H4376 it,

Get wisdom ^H2451, instruction ^H4148, and understanding ^H998.

24 The father ^H1 of the righteous ^H6662 will greatly ^H1524 rejoice ^H1523,

And he who fathers ^H3205 a wise ^H2450 son ^H2450 will be ^H8055 glad ^H8055 in him.

25 Let your father ^H1 and your mother ^H517 be ^H8055 glad ^H8055,

And let her rejoice ^H1523 who gave ^H3205 birth ^H3205 to you.

26 Give ^H5414 me your heart ^H3820, my son ^H1121,

And let your eyes ^H5869 [fn]delight ^H7521 in my ways ^H1870.

27 For a prostitute ^H2181 is a deep ^H6013 pit ^H7745,

And increases ^H3254 the treacherous ^H898 among mankind ^H120.

29 Who ^H4310 has woe ^H190? Who ^H4310 has sorrow ^H17?

Who ^H4310 has contentions ^H4066? Who ^H4310 has complaining ^H7879?

Who ^H4310 has wounds ^H6482 without ^H2600 cause ^H2600?

Who ^H4310 has red ^H2448 eyes ^H5869?

30 Those who linger ^H309 long over ^H5921 wine ^H3196,

Those who go ^H935 to [fn]taste ^H2713 mixed ^H4469 wine ^H4469.

31 Do not look ^H7200 at wine ^H3196 when ^H3588 it is red ^H119,

When ^H3588 it [fn]sparkles ^H5414 H5869 in the cup ^H3563,

When it goes ^H1980 down ^H1980 smoothly ^H4339;

32 In the end ^H319 it bites ^H5391 like a snake ^H5175

And stings ^H6567 like a viper ^H6848.

34 And you will be like one who lies ^H7901 down ^H7901 in the [fn]middle ^H3820 of the sea ^H3220,

Or like one who lies ^H7901 down ^H7901 on the top ^H7218 of a [fn]mast ^H2260.

35 “They struck ^H5221 me, but I did not become ^H2470 [fn]ill ^H2470;

They beat ^H1986 me, but I did not know ^H3045 it.

When ^H4970 will I awake ^H6974?

I will seek ^H1245 [fn]another ^H5750 H3254 drink.”
