On Life and Conduct
1 A good name H8034 is to be more H4480 desired H977 than H4480 great H7227 wealth H6239;
Favor H2580 is better H2896 than H4480 silver H3701 and gold H2091.
2 The rich H6223 and the poor H7326 [fn]have H6298 a H6298 common H6298 bond H6298,
The LORD H3068 is the Maker H6213 of them all H3605.
3 A prudent H6175 person H6175 sees H7200 evil H7451 and hides H5641 himself,
But the naive H6612 proceed H5674, and pay H6064 the H6064 penalty H6064.
4 The reward H6118 of humility H6038 and [fn]the fear H3374 of the LORD H3068
Are riches H6239, honor H3519, and life H2416.
5 Thorns H6791 and snares H6341 are in the way H1870 of the perverse H6141;
One who guards H8104 himself H5315 will be H7368 far H7368 from them.
6 Train H2596 up H2596 a child H5288 [fn]in the way H1870 he should go,
Even H1571 when H3588 he grows H2204 older H2204 he will not abandon H5493 it.
7 The rich H6223 rules H4910 over the poor H7326,
And the borrower H3867 becomes the lender’s H376 H3867 slave H5650.
8 One who sows H2232 injustice H5766 will reap H7114 disaster H205,
And the rod H7626 of his fury H5678 will perish H3615.
9 One who [fn]is generous H2896 H5869 will be blessed H1288,
Because H3588 he gives H5414 some H4480 of his food H3899 to the poor H1800.
10 Drive H1644 out H1644 the scoffer H3887, and strife H4066 will leave H3318,
Even quarreling H1779 and dishonor H7036 will cease H7673.
11 One who loves H157 purity H2889 of heart H3820
And [fn]whose speech H8193 is gracious H2580, the king H4428 is his friend H7453.
12 The eyes H5869 of the LORD H3068 protect H5341 knowledge H1847,
But He overthrows H5557 the words H1697 of the treacherous H898 person H898.
13 The [fn]lazy H6102 one H6102 says H559, “There is a lion H738 outside H2351;
I will be killed H7523 in the streets H7339!”
14 The mouth H6310 of [fn]an adulteress H2114 is a deep H6013 pit H7745;
He who is cursed H2194 of the LORD H3068 will fall H5307 [fn]into it.
15 Foolishness H200 is bound H7194 up H7194 in the heart H3820 of a child H5288;
The rod H7626 of discipline H4148 will remove H7368 it far H7368 from him.
16 One who oppresses H6231 the poor H1800 to make H7235 [fn]more H7235 for himself,
Or gives H5414 to the rich H6223, will only H389 come to poverty H4270.
17 Extend H5186 your ear H241 and hear H8085 the words H1697 of the wise H2450,
And apply H7896 your mind H3820 to my knowledge H1847;
18 For it will be pleasant H5273 if H3588 you keep H8104 them within H990 you,
[fn]So that they may be H3559 ready H3559 on your lips H8193.
19 So that your trust H4009 may be in the LORD H3068,
I have [fn]taught H3045 you today H3117, you indeed H637.
20 Have I not written H3789 to you [fn]excellent H7991 things H7991
Of counsels H4156 and knowledge H1847,
21 To make you know H3045 the [fn]certainty H7189 of the words H561 of truth H571,
So that you may [fn]correctly H571 answer H7725 him who sent H7971 you?
22 Do not rob H1497 the poor H1800 because H3588 he is poor H1800,
Nor H408 crush H1792 the needy H6041 at the gate H8179;
23 For the LORD H3068 will plead H7378 their case H7379
And [fn]take H6906 the life H5315 of those who rob H6906 them.
24 Do not make H7462 friends H7462 with a person H1167 given to anger H639,
Or go H935 with a hot-tempered H2534 person H376,
25 Or H6435 you will learn H502 his ways H734
And [fn]find H3947 a snare H4170 for yourself H5315.
26 Do not be among those who shake H8628 hands H3709,
Among those who become H6148 guarantors H6148 for debts H4859.
27 If H518 you have H369 nothing H369 with which to repay H7999,
Why H4100 should he take H3947 your bed H4904 from under H8478 you?
28 Do not move H5472 the ancient H5769 boundary H1366
Which H834 your fathers H1 have set H6213.
29 Do you see H2372 a person H376 skilled H4106 in his work H4399?
He will stand H3320 before H6440 kings H4428;
He will not stand H3320 before H6440 obscure H2823 people H2823.
