Contrast of the Upright and the Wicked
1 Better H2896 is a dry H2720 morsel H6595 and quietness H7962 with it
Than H4480 a house H1004 full H4392 of [fn]feasting H2077 with strife H7379.
2 A servant H5650 who acts H7919 wisely H7919 will rule H4910 over a son H1121 who acts H954 shamefully H954,
And will share H2505 in the inheritance H5159 among H8432 brothers H251.
3 The refining H4715 pot H4715 is for silver H3701 and the furnace H3564 for gold H2091,
But the LORD H3068 tests H974 hearts H3820.
4 An evildoer H7489 listens H7181 to wicked H205 lips H8193;
A [fn]liar H8267 pays H238 attention H238 to a destructive H1942 tongue H3956.
5 One who mocks H3932 the poor H7326 taunts H2778 his Maker H6213;
One who rejoices H8056 at disaster H343 will not go H5352 unpunished H5352.
6 Grandchildren H1121 are the crown H5850 of the old H2205,
And the glory H8597 of sons H1121 is their fathers H1.
7 [fn]Excellent H3499 speech H8193 is not fitting H5000 for a fool H5036,
Much H637 H3588 less H637 are lying H8267 lips H8193 to a prince H5081.
8 A bribe H7810 is a [fn]charm H68 H2580 in the sight H5869 of its owner H1167;
Wherever H413 H3605 H834 he turns H6437, he prospers H7919.
9 One who conceals H3680 an offense H6588 seeks H1245 love H160,
But one who repeats H8138 a matter H1697 separates H6504 close H441 friends H441.
10 A rebuke H1606 goes H5181 deeper H5181 into one who has H995 understanding H995
Than H4480 a hundred H3967 blows H5221 into a fool H3684.
11 A rebellious H4805 person H4805 seeks H1245 only H389 evil H7451,
So a cruel H394 messenger H4397 will be sent H7971 against him.
12 Let a person H376 meet H6298 a bear H1677 robbed H7909 of H7909 her cubs H7909,
Rather H408 than a fool H3684 in his foolishness H200.
13 One who returns H7725 evil H7451 for good H2896,
Evil H7451 will not depart H4185 from his house H1004.
14 The beginning H7225 of strife H4066 is like letting H6362 out H6362 water H4325,
So abandon H5203 the quarrel H7379 before H6440 it breaks H1566 out H1566.
15 One who justifies H6663 the wicked H7563 and one who condemns H7561 the righteous H6662,
Both H1571 H8147 of them alike H1571 are an abomination H8441 to the LORD H3068.
16 Why H4100 H2088 is there money H4242 in the hand H3027 of a fool H3684 to buy H7069 wisdom H2451,
When [fn]he has H369 no H369 sense H3820?
17 A friend H7453 loves H157 at all H3605 times H6256,
And a brother H251 is born H3205 for adversity H7451.
18 A person H120 lacking H2638 in [fn]sense H3820 shakes H8628 hands H3709
And becomes H6148 guarantor H6161 in the presence H6440 of his neighbor H7453.
19 One who loves H157 wrongdoing H6588 loves H157 strife H4683;
One who makes H1361 his doorway H6607 high H1361 seeks H1245 destruction H7667.
20 One who has a crooked H6141 [fn]mind H3820 finds H4672 nothing H3808 good H2896,
And one who is [fn]corrupted H2015 in his language H3956 falls H5307 into evil H7451.
21 He who fathers H3205 a fool H3684 does so to his sorrow H8424,
And the father H1 of a fool H5036 has H8055 no H3808 joy H8055.
22 A joyful H8056 heart H3820 [fn]is H3190 good H3190 medicine H1456,
But a broken H5218 spirit H7307 dries H3001 up H3001 the bones H1634.
23 A wicked H7563 person H7563 accepts H3947 a bribe H7810 [fn]from an inside H2436 pocket H2436
To pervert H5186 the ways H734 of justice H4941.
24 Wisdom H2451 is in the presence H6440 of one who has H995 understanding H995,
But the eyes H5869 of a fool H3684 are on the ends H7097 of the earth H776.
25 A foolish H3684 son H1121 is a grief H3708 to his father H1,
And bitterness H4470 to her who gave H3205 birth H3205 to him.
26 It is also H1571 not good H2896 to fine H6064 the righteous H6662,
Nor to strike H5221 the noble H5081 for their uprightness H3476.
27 One who withholds H2820 his words H561 [fn]has H3045 knowledge H1847,
And one who has a cool H7119 spirit H7307 is a person H376 of understanding H8394.
28 Even H1571 a fool H191, when he keeps H2790 silent H2790, is considered H2803 wise H2450;
When he closes H331 his lips H8193, he is considered prudent H995.
