“‘None of these men in this evil generation will see the good land I swore to give your ancestors,
“But now, why should we die? This great fire will consume us and we will die if we hear the voice of the LORD our God any longer.
“Instead, this is what you are to do to them: tear down their altars, smash their sacred pillars, cut down their Asherah poles, and burn their carved images.

But if this accusation is true and no evidence of the young woman’s virginity is found,
“But if the man encounters an engaged woman in the open country, and he seizes and rapes her, only the man who raped her must die.
“If a man marries a woman, but she becomes displeasing to him because he finds something indecent about her, he may write her a divorce certificate, hand it to her, and send her away from his house.
“If the guilty party deserves to be flogged, the judge will make him lie down and be flogged in his presence with the number of lashes appropriate for his crime.
“But if the man doesn’t want to marry his sister-in-law, she is to go to the elders at the city gate and say, ‘My brother-in-law refuses to preserve his brother’s name in Israel. He isn’t willing to perform the duty of a brother-in-law for me.’
“Now if you faithfully obey the LORD your God and are careful to follow all his commands I am giving you today, the LORD your God will put you far above all the nations of the earth.
“But if you do not obey the LORD your God by carefully following all his commands and statutes I am giving you today, all these curses will come and overtake you:
“If you are not careful to obey all the words of this law, which are written in this scroll, by fearing this glorious and awe-inspiring name — the LORD, your God —
“Even if your exiles are at the farthest horizon, he will gather you and bring you back from there.
“But if your heart turns away and you do not listen and you are led astray to bow in worship to other gods and serve them,
How could one pursue a thousand,
or two put ten thousand to flight,
unless their Rock had sold them,
unless the LORD had given them up?
