“I baptize you with[fn] water for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is more powerful than I. I am not worthy to remove[fn] his sandals. He himself will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,

for the kingdom of heaven is theirs.

“If I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

He asked them, “How is it then that David, inspired by the Spirit,[fn] calls him ‘Lord':

“I baptize you with[fn] water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

Just then a man with an unclean spirit was in their synagogue. He cried out,

Right away Jesus perceived in his spirit that they were thinking like this within themselves and said to them, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts?

As soon as he got out of the boat, a man with an unclean spirit came out of the tombs and met him.

Sighing deeply in his spirit, he said, “Why does this generation demand a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to this generation.”

When Jesus saw that a crowd was quickly gathering, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you: Come out of him and never enter him again.”

“David himself says by the Holy Spirit:

The Lord declared to my Lord,

‘Sit at my right hand

until I put your enemies under your feet.'

“And he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of fathers to their children, and the disobedient to the understanding of the righteous, to make ready for the Lord a prepared people.”

The child grew up and became strong in spirit,[fn] and he was in the wilderness until the day of his public appearance to Israel.

Guided by the Spirit, he entered the temple. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform for him what was customary under the law,

John answered them all, “I baptize you with water, but one who is more powerful than I am is coming. I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals. He will baptize you with[fn] the Holy Spirit and fire.

Then Jesus left the Jordan, full of the Holy Spirit, and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness

For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was guarded, bound by chains and shackles, he would snap the restraints and be driven by the demon into deserted places.

As the boy was still approaching, the demon knocked him down and threw him into severe convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.

At that time he[fn] rejoiced in the Holy[fn] Spirit and said, “I praise[fn] you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, because this was your good pleasure.[fn]

“I didn't know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The one you see the Spirit descending and resting on ​— ​he is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.'

“But an hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and in truth.[fn] Yes, the Father wants such people to worship him.

When Jesus saw her crying, and the Jews who had come with her crying, he was deeply moved[fn] in his spirit and troubled.

When Jesus had said this, he was troubled in his spirit and testified, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.”

“for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit in a few days.”

But they were unable to stand up against his wisdom and the Spirit by whom he was speaking.

“You stiff-necked people with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are always resisting the Holy Spirit. As your ancestors did, you do also.

“how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how he went about doing good and healing all who were under the tyranny of the devil, because God was with him.

“I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.'

“For it was the Holy Spirit's decision ​— ​and ours ​— ​not to place further burdens on you beyond these requirements:

She did this for many days.

Paul was greatly annoyed. Turning to the spirit, he said, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her! ” And it came out right away.

He had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit,[fn] he was speaking and teaching accurately about Jesus, although he knew only John's baptism.

After these events, Paul resolved by the Spirit[fn] to pass through Macedonia and Achaia and go to Jerusalem. “After I've been there,” he said, “It is necessary for me to see Rome as well.”

“And now I am on my way to Jerusalem, compelled by the Spirit,[fn] not knowing what I will encounter there,

On the contrary, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly, and circumcision is of the heart ​— ​by the Spirit, not the letter.[fn] That person's praise is not from people but from God.

You, however, are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to him.

because if you live according to the flesh, you are going to die. But if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

The Spirit himself testifies together with our spirit that we are God's children,

I speak the truth in Christ ​— ​I am not lying; my conscience testifies to me through the Holy Spirit[fn] ​— ​

Do not lack diligence in zeal; be fervent in the Spirit;[fn] serve the Lord.

for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.

to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles, serving as a priest of the gospel of God. God's purpose is that the Gentiles may be an acceptable offering, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

Even though I am absent in the body, I am present in spirit. As one who is present with you in this way, I have already pronounced judgment on the one who has been doing such a thing.

And some of you used to be like this. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

and his interests are divided. The unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the things of the Lord, so that she may be holy both in body and in spirit. But the married woman is concerned about the things of the world ​— ​how she may please her husband.

Therefore I want you to know that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus is cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.

to another, faith by the same Spirit, to another, gifts of healing by the one Spirit,

For we were all baptized by[fn] one Spirit into one body ​— ​whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free ​— ​and we were all given one Spirit to drink.

For the person who speaks in a tongue[fn] is not speaking to people but to God, since no one understands him; he speaks mysteries in the Spirit.[fn]

What then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with my understanding. I will sing praise with the spirit, and I will also sing praise with my understanding.

You show that you are Christ's letter, delivered[fn] by us, not written with ink but with the Spirit of the living God ​— ​not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.[fn]

by purity, by knowledge, by patience, by kindness, by the Holy Spirit, by sincere love,

I urged Titus to go, and I sent the brother with him. Titus didn't take advantage of you, did he? Didn't we walk in the same spirit and in the same footsteps?

Are you so foolish? After beginning by the Spirit, are you now finishing by the flesh?

For we eagerly await through the Spirit, by faith, the hope of righteousness.

I say, then, walk by the Spirit and you will certainly not carry out the desire of the flesh.

But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.

Brothers and sisters, if someone is overtaken in any wrongdoing, you who are spiritual, restore such a person with a gentle spirit,[fn] watching out for yourselves so that you also won't be tempted.

In him you also were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and when you believed.

For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.

In him you are also being built together for God's dwelling in the Spirit.

This was not made known to people[fn] in other generations as it is now revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit:

to be renewed[fn] in the spirit of your minds,

And don't get drunk with wine, which leads to reckless living, but be filled by the Spirit:

Pray at all times in the Spirit with every prayer and request, and stay alert with all perseverance and intercession for all the saints.

Just one thing: As citizens of heaven, live your life worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or am absent, I will hear about you that you are standing firm in one spirit, in one accord,[fn] contending together for the faith of the gospel,

For we are the circumcision, the ones who worship by the Spirit of God, boast in Christ Jesus, and do not put confidence in the flesh ​— ​

and he has told us about your love in the Spirit.

For I may be absent in body, but I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see how well ordered you are and the strength of your faith in Christ.

because our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, in the Holy Spirit, and with full assurance. You know how we lived among you for your benefit,

and then the lawless one will be revealed. The Lord Jesus will destroy him with the breath of his mouth and will bring him to nothing at the appearance of his coming.

And most certainly, the mystery of godliness is great:

He[fn] was manifested in the flesh,

vindicated in the Spirit,

seen by angels,

preached among the nations,

believed on in the world,

taken up in glory.

It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you. These things have now been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven ​— ​angels long to catch a glimpse of these things.

For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh[fn] but made alive by the Spirit,[fn]

For this reason the gospel was also preached to those who are now dead,[fn] so that, although they might be judged in the flesh according to human standards, they might live in the spirit according to God's standards.

Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see if they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

But you, dear friends, as you build yourselves up in your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit,

I was in the Spirit[fn] on the Lord's day, and I heard a loud voice behind me like a trumpet

Immediately I was in the Spirit, and there was a throne in heaven and someone was seated on it.

Then he carried me away in the Spirit[fn] to a wilderness.

I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was covered[fn] with blasphemous names and had seven heads and ten horns.

He then carried me away in the Spirit[fn] to a great, high mountain and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God,
