“We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands, and in three days I will build another not made by hands.' ”
Then he said to them, “No doubt you will quote this proverb[fn] to me: ‘Doctor, heal yourself. What we've heard that took place in Capernaum, do here in your hometown also.' ”
“Why do we need any more testimony,” they said, “since we've heard it ourselves from his mouth? ”
Then the crowd replied to him, “We have heard from the law that the Messiah will remain forever. So how can you say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up'? Who is this Son of Man? ”
“Since we have heard that some without our authorization went out from us and troubled you with their words and unsettled your hearts,[fn]
and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed? ”
“No,” they told him, “we haven't even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
When we heard this, both we and the local people pleaded with him not to go up to Jerusalem.
For this reason also, since the day we heard this, we haven't stopped praying for you. We are asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding,[fn]
