“And don't presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones.

“You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden.

“No one can serve two masters, since either he will hate one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

“Can any of you add one moment to his life span[fn] by worrying?

“A good tree can't produce bad fruit; neither can a bad tree produce good fruit.

When the disciples heard this, they were utterly astonished and asked, “Then who can be saved? ”

Again, a second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this[fn] cannot pass[fn] unless I drink it, your will be done.”

“He saved others, but he cannot save himself! He is the King of Israel! Let him[fn] come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.

“Why does he speak like this? He's blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone? ”

So he summoned them and spoke to them in parables: “How can Satan drive out Satan?

“And if Satan opposes himself and is divided, he cannot stand but is finished.

“Nothing that goes into a person from outside can defile him but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.”[fn]

He said to them, “Are you also as lacking in understanding? Don't you realize that nothing going into a person from the outside can defile him?

and his clothes became dazzling ​— ​extremely white as no launderer on earth could whiten them.

And he told them, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer.”[fn]

They were even more astonished, saying to one another, “Then who can be saved? ”

In the same way, the chief priests with the scribes were mocking him among themselves and saying, “He saved others, but he cannot save himself!

“Therefore produce fruit consistent with repentance. And don't start saying to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father,' for I tell you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones.

Then the scribes and the Pharisees began to think to themselves, “Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone? ”

He also told them a parable: “Can the blind guide the blind? Won't they both fall into a pit?

“Can any of you add one moment to his life span[fn] by worrying?

“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters ​— ​yes, and even his own life ​— ​he cannot be my disciple.

“In the same way, therefore, every one of you who does not renounce[fn] all his possessions cannot be my disciple.

“No servant can serve two masters, since either he will hate one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”

Those who heard this asked, “Then who can be saved? ”

This man came to him at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God, for no one could perform these signs you do unless God were with him.”

“How can these things be? ” asked Nicodemus.

John responded, “No one can receive anything unless it has been given to him from heaven.

Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, the Son is not able to do anything on his own, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father[fn] does, the Son likewise does these things.

“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws[fn] him, and I will raise him up on the last day.

At that, the Jews argued among themselves, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat? ”

Therefore, when many of his disciples heard this, they said, “This teaching is hard. Who can accept[fn] it? ”

He said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted to him by the Father.”

“The world cannot hate you, but it does hate me because I testify about it ​— ​that its works are evil.

“We[fn] must do the works of him who sent me[fn] while it is day. Night is coming when no one can work.

Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, because he doesn't keep the Sabbath.” But others were saying, “How can a sinful man perform such signs? ” And there was a division among them.

Others were saying, “These aren't the words of someone who is demon-possessed. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind? ”

“My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all. No one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand.

“If he called those to whom the word of God came ‘gods' ​— ​and the Scripture cannot be broken ​— ​

“He is the Spirit of truth. The world is unable to receive him because it doesn't see him or know him. But you do know him, because he remains with you and will be[fn] in you.

“Remain in me, and I in you. Just as a branch is unable to produce fruit by itself unless it remains on the vine, neither can you unless you remain in me.

“Can anyone withhold water and prevent these people from being baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have? ”

“If then I did anything wrong and am deserving of death, I am not trying to escape death; but if there is nothing to what these men accuse me of, no one can give me up to them. I appeal to Caesar! ”

The mindset of the flesh is hostile to God because it does not submit to God's law. Indeed, it is unable to do so.

But the person without the Spirit[fn] does not receive what comes from God's Spirit, because it is foolishness to him; he is not able to understand it since it is evaluated[fn] spiritually.

For no one can lay any foundation other than what has been laid down. That foundation is Jesus Christ.

Therefore I want you to know that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus is cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.

The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don't need you! ” Or again, the head can't say to the feet, “I don't need you! ”

What I am saying, brothers and sisters, is this: Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor can corruption inherit incorruption.

who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see, to him be honor and eternal power. Amen.

if we are faithless, he remains faithful,

for he cannot deny himself.

For since he himself has suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted.

Therefore, he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, since he always lives to intercede for them.

Since the law has only a shadow of the good things to come, and not the reality itself of those things, it can never perfect the worshipers by the same sacrifices they continually offer year after year.

What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but does not have works? Can such faith save him?

but no one can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

Can a fig tree produce olives, my brothers and sisters, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a saltwater spring yield fresh water.

Everyone who has been born of God does not sin,[fn] because his seed remains in him; he is not able to sin,[fn] because he has been born of God.

If anyone says, “I love God,” and yet hates his brother or sister, he is a liar. For the person who does not love his brother or sister whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.[fn]

“I know your works. Look, I have placed before you an open door that no one can close because you have but little power; yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.

“because the great day of their[fn] wrath has come! And who is able to stand? ”

They worshiped the dragon because he gave authority to the beast. And they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast? Who is able to wage war against it? ”
