Then the LORD said, “I will wipe mankind, whom I created, off the face of the earth, together with the animals, creatures that crawl, and birds of the sky ​— ​for I regret that I made them.”

Then God said to Noah, “I have decided to put an end to every creature, for the earth is filled with wickedness because of them; therefore I am going to destroy them along with the earth.

He wiped out every living thing that was on the face of the earth, from mankind to livestock, to creatures that crawl, to the birds of the sky, and they were wiped off the earth. Only Noah was left, and those that were with him in the ark.

When the LORD smelled the pleasing aroma, he said to himself, “I will never again curse the ground because of human beings, even though the inclination of the human heart is evil from youth onward. And I will never again strike down every living thing as I have done.

“And I will require a penalty for your lifeblood;[fn] I will require it from any animal and from any human; if someone murders a fellow human, I will require that person's life.

They called Rebekah and said to her, “Will you go with this man? ”

She replied, “I will go.”

Then Rebekah and her female servants got up, mounted the camels, and followed the man. So the servant took Rebekah and left.

So Abimelech warned all the people, “Whoever harms this man or his wife will certainly be put to death.”

There Judah saw the daughter of a Canaanite named Shua; he took her as a wife and slept with her.

As she was being brought out, she sent her father-in-law this message: “I am pregnant by the man to whom these items belong.” And she added, “Examine them. Whose signet ring, cord, and staff are these? ”

“We are all sons of one man. We are honest; your servants are not spies.”

“May God Almighty cause the man to be merciful to you so that he will release your other brother and Benjamin to you. As for me, if I am deprived of my sons, then I am deprived.”

“We told him, ‘We cannot go down unless our younger brother goes with us. If our younger brother isn't with us, we cannot see the man.'

Throughout the land of Egypt, the hail struck down everything in the field, both people and animals. The hail beat down every plant of the field and shattered every tree in the field.

“But against all the Israelites, whether people or animals, not even a dog will snarl,[fn] so that you may know that the LORD makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel.

“I will pass through the land of Egypt on that night and strike every firstborn male in the land of Egypt, both people and animals. I am the LORD; I will execute judgments against all the gods of Egypt.

“Consecrate every firstborn male to me, the firstborn from every womb among the Israelites, both man and domestic animal; it is mine.”

“You must redeem every firstborn of a donkey with a flock animal, but if you do not redeem it, break its neck. However, you must redeem every firstborn among your sons.

“When a man gives his neighbor valuables[fn] or goods to keep, but they are stolen from that person's house, the thief, if caught, must repay double.

“It must not be used for ordinary anointing on a person's body, and you must not make anything like it using its formula. It is holy, and it must be holy to you.

“Or if he touches human uncleanness ​— ​any uncleanness by which one can become defiled ​— ​without being aware of it, but later recognizes it, he incurs guilt.

“As for the priest who presents someone's burnt offering, the hide of the burnt offering he has presented belongs to him; it is the priest's.

“If someone touches anything unclean, whether human uncleanness, an unclean animal, or any unclean, abhorrent[fn] creature, and eats meat from the LORD's fellowship sacrifice, that person is to be cut off from his people.”

“Aaron will lay both his hands on the head of the live goat and confess over it all the Israelites' iniquities and rebellious acts ​— ​all their sins. He is to put them on the goat's head and send it away into the wilderness by the man appointed for the task.[fn]

“But if the people of the country look the other way when that man[fn] gives any of his children to Molech, and do not put him to death,

“If a priest's daughter defiles herself by promiscuity,[fn] she defiles her father; she must be burned to death.

“If the priest's daughter is married to a man outside a priest's family,[fn] she is not to eat from the holy contributions.[fn]

“If a man kills anyone, he must be put to death.

“Nothing that a man permanently sets apart to the LORD from all he owns, whether a person, an animal, or his inherited landholding, can be sold or redeemed; everything set apart is especially holy to the LORD.

“because every firstborn belongs to me. At the time I struck down every firstborn in the land of Egypt, I consecrated every firstborn in Israel to myself, both man and animal. They are mine; I am the LORD.”

“For every firstborn among the Israelites is mine, both man and animal. I consecrated them to myself on the day I struck down every firstborn in the land of Egypt.

But there were some men who were unclean because of a human corpse, so they could not observe the Passover on that day. These men came before Moses and Aaron the same day

“Tell the Israelites: When any one of you or your descendants is unclean because of a corpse or is on a distant journey, he may still observe the Passover to the LORD.

“The firstborn of every living thing, human or animal, presented to the LORD belongs to you. But you must certainly redeem a human firstborn, and redeem the firstborn of an unclean animal.

“The person who touches any human corpse will be unclean for seven days.

“Anyone who touches a body of a person who has died, and does not purify himself, defiles the tabernacle of the LORD. That person will be cut off from Israel. He remains unclean because the water for impurity has not been sprinkled on him, and his uncleanness is still on him.

God is not a man, that he might lie,

or a son of man, that he might change his mind.

Does he speak and not act,

or promise and not fulfill?

followed the Israelite man into the tent,[fn] and drove it through both the Israelite man and the woman ​— ​through her belly. Then the plague on the Israelites was stopped,

The name of the slain Israelite man, who was struck dead with the Midianite woman, was Zimri son of Salu, the leader of a Simeonite family.[fn]

and took away all the spoils of war and the captives, both people and animals.

“You, the priest Eleazar, and the family heads of the community are to take a count of what was captured, people and animals.

“Do not show partiality when deciding a case; listen to small and great alike. Do not be intimidated by anyone, for judgment belongs to God. Bring me any case too difficult for you, and I will hear it.

“One witness cannot establish any iniquity or sin against a person, whatever that person has done. A fact must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.

There has been no day like it before or since, when the LORD listened to a man, because the LORD fought for Israel.

What you have done so far[fn] was a little thing to you, Lord GOD, for you have also spoken about your servant's house in the distant future. And this is a revelation[fn] for mankind, Lord GOD.

David answered Gad, “I have great anxiety. Please, let us fall into the LORD's hands because his mercies are great, but don't let me fall into human hands.”

When the king heard the message that the man of God had cried out against the altar at Bethel, Jeroboam stretched out his hand from the altar and said, “Arrest him! ” But the hand he stretched out against him withered, and he could not pull it back to himself.

He followed the man of God and found him sitting under an oak tree. He asked him, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah? ”

“I am,” he said.

and he went and found the corpse thrown on the road with the donkey and the lion standing beside the corpse. The lion had not eaten the corpse or mauled the donkey.

She went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, shut him in, and left.

The diseased men came and called to the city's gatekeepers and told them, “We went to the Aramean camp and no one was there ​— ​no human sounds. There was nothing but tethered horses and donkeys, and the tents were intact.”

The king had been speaking to Gehazi, the attendant of the man of God, saying, “Tell me all the great things Elisha has done.”

As Josiah turned, he saw the tombs there on the mountain. He sent someone to take the bones out of the tombs, and he burned them on the altar. He defiled it according to the word of the LORD proclaimed by the man of God[fn] who proclaimed these things.

This was a little thing to you,[fn] God, for you have spoken about your servant's house in the distant future. You regard me as a man of distinction,[fn] LORD God.

According to the ordinances of his father David, he appointed the divisions of the priests over their service, of the Levites over their responsibilities to offer praise and to minister before the priests following the daily requirement, and of the gatekeepers by their divisions with respect to each temple gate, for this had been the command of David, the man of God.

So the king called Jehoiada the high priest and said, “Why haven't you required the Levites to bring from Judah and Jerusalem the tax imposed by the LORD's servant Moses and the assembly of Israel for the tent of the testimony?

They stood at their prescribed posts, according to the law of Moses, the man of God. The priests splattered the blood received from the Levites,

Jeshua son of Jozadak and his brothers the priests along with Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and his brothers began to build the altar of Israel's God in order to offer burnt offerings on it, as it is written in the law of Moses, the man of God.

The heads of the Levites ​— ​Hashabiah, Sherebiah, and Jeshua son of Kadmiel, along with their relatives opposite them ​— ​gave praise and thanks, division by division, as David the man of God had prescribed.

as well as his relatives ​— ​Shemaiah, Azarel, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethanel, Judah, and Hanani, with the musical instruments of David, the man of God. Ezra the scribe went in front of them.

Isn't each person consigned to forced labor on earth?

Are not his days like those of a hired worker?

The life of every living thing is in his hand,

as well as the breath of all humanity.

as water wears away stones

and torrents wash away the soil from the land,

so you destroy a man's hope.

I wish that someone might argue for a man with God

just as anyone[fn] would for a friend.

This is the wicked person's lot from God,

the inheritance God ordained for him.

As for me, is my complaint against a human being?

Then why shouldn't I be impatient?

how much less a human, who is a maggot,

a son of man,[fn] who is a worm!

This is a wicked man's lot from God,

the inheritance the ruthless receive from the Almighty.

But when God is silent, who can declare him guilty?

When he hides his face, who can see him?

Yet he watches over both individuals and nations,

Your wickedness affects a person like yourself,

and your righteousness, a son of man.[fn]

serve as his sign to all mankind,

so that all men may know his work.

what is a human being that you remember him,

a son of man[fn] that you look after him?

But I am a worm and not a man,

scorned by mankind and despised by people.

A person's steps are established by the LORD,

and he takes pleasure in his way.

[fn]Vindicate me, God, and champion my cause

against an unfaithful nation;

rescue me from the deceitful and unjust person.

Give us aid against the foe,

for human help is worthless.

Even human wrath will praise you;

you will clothe yourself

with the wrath that remains.[fn]

the root[fn] your right hand planted,

the son[fn] that you made strong for yourself.

Let your hand be with the man at your right hand,

with the son of man

you have made strong for yourself.

Lord, you have been our refuge[fn]

in every generation.

wine that makes human hearts glad —

making his face shine with oil —

and bread that sustains human hearts.

Give us aid against the foe,

for human help is worthless.

He struck down the firstborn of Egypt,

both people and animals.

Rescue me, LORD, from evil men.

Keep me safe from violent men

LORD, what is a human that you care for him,

a son of man[fn] that you think of him?

A person's gift opens doors[fn] for him

and brings him before the great.

One who rebukes a person will later find more favor

than one who flatters with his tongue.

I applied my mind to examine and explore through wisdom all that is done under heaven. God has given people[fn] this miserable task to keep them occupied.

I explored with my mind the pull of wine on my body ​— ​my mind still guiding me with wisdom — and how to grasp folly, until I could see what is good for people to do under heaven[fn] during the few days of their lives.

I also amassed silver and gold for myself, and the treasure of kings and provinces. I gathered male and female singers for myself, and many concubines, the delights of men.[fn][fn]

I have seen the task that God has given the children of Adam to keep them occupied.

I said to myself, “This happens so that God may test the children of Adam and they may see for themselves that they are like animals.”

Who knows if the spirits of the children of Adam go upward and the spirits of animals go downward to the earth?

All of a person's labor is for his stomach,[fn]

yet the appetite is never satisfied.

It is better to go to a house of mourning

than to go to a house of feasting,

since that is the end of all mankind,

and the living should take it to heart.

Who is like the wise person, and who knows the interpretation of a matter? A person's wisdom brightens his face, and the sternness of his face is changed.

For every activity there is a right time and procedure, even though a person's troubles are heavy on him.

Because the sentence against an evil act is not carried out quickly, the heart of people is filled with the desire to commit evil.

This is an evil in all that is done under the sun: there is one fate for everyone. In addition, the hearts of people are full of evil, and madness is in their hearts while they live; after that they go to the dead.

For certainly no one knows his time: like fish caught in a cruel net or like birds caught in a trap, so people are trapped in an evil time as it suddenly falls on them.

On that day seven women

will seize one man, saying,

“We will eat our own bread

and provide our own clothing.

Just let us bear your name.

Take away our disgrace.”

Then the LORD said to me, “Take a large piece of parchment[fn] and write on it with an ordinary pen:[fn] Maher-shalal-hash-baz.[fn]

Therefore everyone's hands will become weak,

and every man will lose heart.

On the day that you plant,

you will help them to grow,

and in the morning

you will help your seed to sprout,

but the harvest will vanish

on the day of disease and incurable pain.

On that day Tyre will be forgotten for seventy years ​— ​the life span of one king. At the end of seventy years, what the song says about the prostitute will happen to Tyre:

And if the document is given to one who cannot read and he is asked to read it,[fn] he will say, “I can't read.”

Then Assyria will fall,

but not by human sword;

a sword will devour him,

but not one made by man.

He will flee from the sword;

his young men will be put to forced labor.

A voice was saying, “Cry out! ”

Another said,[fn] “What should I cry out? ”

“All humanity is grass,

and all its goodness is like the flower of the field.

The woodworker stretches out a measuring line,

he outlines it with a stylus;

he shapes it with chisels

and outlines it with a compass.

He makes it according to a human form,

like a beautiful person,

to dwell in a temple.

I ​— ​I am the one who comforts you.

Who are you that you should fear humans who die,

or a son of man who is given up like grass?

They stopped asking, “Where is the LORD

who brought us from the land of Egypt,

who led us through the wilderness,

through a land of deserts and ravines,

through a land of drought and darkness,[fn]

a land no one traveled through

and where no one lived? ”

I know, LORD,

that a person's way of life is not his own;

no one who walks determines his own steps.

“Just as underwear clings to one's waist, so I fastened the whole house of Israel and of Judah to me” ​— ​this is the LORD's declaration ​— ​“so that they might be my people for my fame, praise, and glory, but they would not obey.

But I have not run away from being your shepherd,

and I have not longed for the fatal day.

You know my words were spoken in your presence.

“Look, the days are coming” ​— ​this is the LORD's declaration ​— ​“when I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of people and the seed of animals.

and I brought them into the temple of the LORD to a chamber occupied by the sons of Hanan son of Igdaliah, a man of God, who had a chamber near the officials' chamber, which was above the chamber of Maaseiah son of Shallum the doorkeeper.

“Therefore, my heart moans like flutes for Moab, and my heart moans like flutes for the people of Kir-heres. And therefore, the wealth he has gained has perished.

“As when Sodom and Gomorrah were overthrown along with their neighbors,” says the LORD, “no one will live there; no human being will stay in it even temporarily.

Hazor will become a jackals' den,

a desolation forever.

No one will live there;

no human being will stay in it even temporarily.

For a nation from the north will attack her;

it will make her land desolate.

No one will be living in it —

both people and animals will escape.[fn]

Just as God demolished Sodom and Gomorrah

and their neighboring towns —

this is the LORD's declaration —

so no one will live there;

no human being will stay in it even temporarily

as a temporary resident.

Her cities have become a desolation,

an arid desert,

a land where no one lives,

where no human being even passes through.

“Say, ‘LORD, you have threatened to cut off this place so that no one will live in it ​— ​people or animals. Indeed, it will remain desolate forever.'

The likeness of four living creatures came from it, and this was their appearance: They looked something like a human,

They had human hands under their wings on their four sides. All four of them had faces and wings.

Their faces looked something like the face of a human, and each of the four had the face of a lion on the right, the face of an ox on the left, and the face of an eagle.

Something like a throne with the appearance of lapis lazuli was above the expanse over their heads. On the throne, high above, was someone who looked like a human.

He said to me, “Son of man, stand up on your feet and I will speak with you.”

He said to me, “Son of man, I am sending you to the Israelites, to[fn] the rebellious pagans who have rebelled against me. The Israelites and their ancestors have transgressed against me to this day.

“But you, son of man, do not be afraid of them and do not be afraid of their words, even though briers and thorns are beside you and you live among scorpions. Don't be afraid of their words or discouraged by the look on their faces, for they are a rebellious house.

“And you, son of man, listen to what I tell you: Do not be rebellious like that rebellious house. Open your mouth and eat what I am giving you.”

He said to me, “Son of man, eat what you find here. Eat this scroll, then go and speak to the house of Israel.”

“Son of man,” he said to me, “feed your stomach and fill your belly with this scroll I am giving you.” So I ate it, and it was as sweet as honey in my mouth.

Next he said to me, “Son of man, listen carefully to all my words that I speak to you and take them to heart.

“Son of man, I have made you a watchman over the house of Israel. When you hear a word from my mouth, give them a warning from me.

“As for you, son of man, they will put ropes on you and bind you with them so you cannot go out among them.

“Now you, son of man, take a brick, set it in front of you, and draw the city of Jerusalem on it.

He said to me, “Son of man, I am going to cut off the supply of bread in Jerusalem. They will anxiously eat food they have weighed out and in dread drink rationed water

“Now you, son of man, take a sharp sword, use it as you would a barber's razor, and shave your head and beard. Then take a set of scales and divide the hair.

“Son of man, face the mountains of Israel and prophesy against them.

“Son of man, this is what the Lord GOD says to the land of Israel:

An end! The end has come

on the four corners of the earth.

The LORD said to me, “Son of man, look toward the north.” I looked to the north, and there was this offensive statue north of the Altar Gate, at the entrance.

He said to me, “Son of man, dig through the wall.” So I dug through the wall and discovered a doorway.

He said to me, “Son of man, do you see what the elders of the house of Israel are doing in the darkness, each at the shrine of his idol? For they are saying, ‘The LORD does not see us. The LORD has abandoned the land.' ”

And he said to me, “Do you see this, son of man? You will see even more detestable acts than these.”

And he said to me, “Do you see this, son of man? Is it not enough for the house of Judah to commit the detestable acts they are doing here, that they must also fill the land with violence and repeatedly anger me, even putting the branch to their nose?[fn]

Each had four faces and each had four wings, with what looked something like human hands under their wings.

The LORD[fn] said to me, “Son of man, these are the men who plot evil and give wicked advice in this city.

“Therefore, prophesy against them. Prophesy, son of man! ”

“Son of man, your own relatives, those who have the right to redeem your property,[fn][fn] along with the entire house of Israel ​— ​all of them ​— ​are those to whom the residents of Jerusalem have said, ‘You are far from the LORD; this land has been given to us as a possession.'

“Son of man, you are living among a rebellious house. They have eyes to see but do not see, and ears to hear but do not hear, for they are a rebellious house.

“Son of man, hasn't the house of Israel, that rebellious house, asked you, ‘What are you doing? '

“Son of man, eat your bread with trembling and drink your water with anxious shaking.

“Son of man, what is this proverb you people have about the land of Israel, which goes, ‘The days keep passing by, and every vision fails'?

“Son of man, notice that the house of Israel is saying, ‘The vision that he sees concerns many years from now; he prophesies about distant times.'

“Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel who are prophesying. Say to those who prophesy out of their own imagination, ‘Hear the word of the LORD!

“Now you, son of man, face[fn] the women among your people who prophesy out of their own imagination, and prophesy against them.

“Son of man, these men have set up idols in their hearts and have put their sinful stumbling blocks in front of themselves. Should I actually let them inquire of me?

“Son of man, suppose a land sins against me by acting faithlessly, and I stretch out my hand against it to cut off its supply of bread, to send famine through it, and to wipe out both people and animals from it.

“Son of man, how does the wood of the vine, that branch among the trees of the forest, compare to any other wood?

“Son of man, confront Jerusalem with her detestable practices.

“Son of man, pose a riddle and speak a parable to the house of Israel.

“Now say to that rebellious house, ‘Don't you know what these things mean? ' Tell them, ‘The king of Babylon came to Jerusalem, took its king and officials, and brought them back with him to Babylon.

“What do you mean by using this proverb concerning the land of Israel:

‘The fathers eat sour grapes,

and the children's teeth are set on edge'?

“Son of man, speak with the elders of Israel and tell them, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says: Are you coming to inquire of me? As I live, I will not let you inquire of me. This is the declaration of the Lord GOD.'

“Therefore, son of man, speak to the house of Israel, and tell them, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says: In this way also your ancestors blasphemed me by committing treachery against me:

“Son of man, face the south and preach against it. Prophesy against the forest land in the Negev,

“Son of man, face Jerusalem and preach against the sanctuaries. Prophesy against the land of Israel,

“But you, son of man, groan! Groan bitterly with a broken heart[fn] right before their eyes.

“Son of man, prophesy, ‘This is what the Lord says! ' You are to proclaim,

‘A sword! A sword is sharpened

and also polished.

“Cry out and wail, son of man, for it is against my people. It is against all the princes of Israel! They are given over to the sword with my people. Therefore strike your thigh in grief.

“So you, son of man, prophesy and clap your hands together:

Let the sword strike two times, even three.

It is a sword for massacre,

a sword for great massacre —

it surrounds[fn] them!

“Now you, son of man, mark out two roads that the sword of Babylon's king can take. Both of them should originate from the same land. And make a signpost at the fork in the road to each city.

“Now you, son of man, prophesy, and say, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says concerning the Ammonites and their contempt.' You are to proclaim,

‘A sword! A sword

is drawn for slaughter,

polished to consume, to flash like lightning.

“As for you, son of man, will you pass judgment? Will you pass judgment against the city of blood? Then explain all her detestable practices to her.

“Son of man, the house of Israel has become merely dross to me. All of them are copper, tin, iron, and lead inside the furnace; they are just dross from silver.

“Son of man, say to her, ‘You are a land that has not been cleansed, that has not received rain in the day of indignation.'

“Son of man, there were two women, daughters of the same mother,

Then the LORD said to me, “Son of man, will you pass judgment against Oholah and Oholibah? Then declare their detestable practices to them.

“Son of man, write down today's date, this very day. The king of Babylon has laid siege to Jerusalem this very day.

“Son of man, I am about to take the delight of your eyes away from you with a fatal blow. But you must not lament or weep or let your tears flow.

“As for you, son of man, know that on that day I will take from them their stronghold ​— ​their pride and joy, the delight of their eyes, and the longing of their hearts ​— ​as well as their sons and daughters.

“Son of man, face the Ammonites and prophesy against them.

“Son of man, because Tyre said about Jerusalem, ‘Aha! The gateway to the peoples is shattered. She has been turned over to me.[fn] I will be filled now that she lies in ruins,'

“Now, son of man, lament for Tyre.

“Son of man, say to the ruler of Tyre, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says: Your[fn] heart is proud, and you have said, “I am a god; I sit in the seat of gods in the heart of the sea.” Yet you are a man and not a god, though you have regarded your heart as that of a god.

“Son of man, lament for the king of Tyre and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says:

You were the seal[fn] of perfection,[fn]

full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.

“Son of man, face Sidon and prophesy against it.

“Son of man, face Pharaoh king of Egypt and prophesy against him and against all of Egypt.

No human foot will pass through it, and no animal foot will pass through it. It will be uninhabited for forty years.

“Son of man, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon made his army labor strenuously against Tyre. Every head was made bald and every shoulder chafed, but he and his army received no compensation from Tyre for the labor he expended against it.

“Son of man, prophesy and say, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says:

Wail, “Woe because of that day! ”

“Son of man, I have broken the arm of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Look, it has not been bandaged ​— ​no medicine has been applied and no splint put on to bandage it so that it can grow strong enough to handle a sword.

“Son of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his hordes,

‘Who are you like in your greatness?

“Son of man, lament for Pharaoh king of Egypt and say to him,

‘You compare yourself to a lion of the nations,

but[fn] you are like a monster[fn] in the seas.

You thrash about in your rivers,

churn up the waters with your feet,

and muddy the[fn] rivers.

“I will slaughter all its cattle

that are beside many waters.

No human foot will churn them again,

and no cattle hooves will disturb them.

“Son of man, wail over the hordes of Egypt and bring Egypt and the daughters of mighty nations down to the underworld,[fn] to be with those who descend to the Pit:

“Son of man, speak to your people and tell them, ‘Suppose I bring the sword against a land, and the people of that land select a man from among them, appointing him as their watchman.

“As for you, son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel. When you hear a word from my mouth, give them a warning from me.

“Now as for you, son of man, say to the house of Israel, ‘You have said this: “Our transgressions and our sins are heavy on us, and we are wasting away because of them! How then can we survive? ” '

“Son of man, those who live in the[fn] ruins in the land of Israel are saying, ‘Abraham was only one person, yet he received possession of the land. But we are many; surely the land has been given to us as a possession.'

“As for you, son of man, your people are talking about you near the city walls and in the doorways of their houses. One person speaks to another, each saying to his brother, ‘Come and hear what the message is that comes from the LORD! '

“Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel. Prophesy, and say to them, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says to the shepherds: Woe to the shepherds of Israel, who have been feeding themselves! Shouldn't the shepherds feed their flock?

“Son of man, face Mount Seir and prophesy against it.

“Son of man, prophesy to the mountains of Israel and say, ‘Mountains of Israel, hear the word of the LORD.

“Son of man, while the house of Israel lived in their land, they defiled it with their conduct and actions. Their behavior before me was like menstrual impurity.

Then he said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live? ”

I replied, “Lord GOD, only you know.”

He said to me, “Prophesy to the breath,[fn] prophesy, son of man. Say to it: This is what the Lord GOD says: Breath, come from the four winds and breathe into these slain so that they may live! ”

Then he said to me, “Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Look how they say, ‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope has perished; we are cut off.'

“Son of man, take a single stick and write on it: Belonging to Judah and the Israelites associated with him. Then take another stick and write on it: Belonging to Joseph ​— ​the stick of Ephraim ​— ​and all the house of Israel associated with him.

“Son of man, face Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of[fn] Meshech and Tubal. Prophesy against him

“Therefore prophesy, son of man, and say to Gog, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says: On that day when my people Israel are dwelling securely, will you not know this

“I will call for a sword against him on all my mountains ​— ​this is the declaration of the Lord GOD ​— ​and every man's sword will be against his brother.

“As for you, son of man, prophesy against Gog and say, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says: Look, I am against you, Gog, chief prince of[fn] Meshech and Tubal.

“When they pass through the land and one of them sees a human bone, he will set up a marker next to it until the buriers have buried it in Hordes of Gog Valley.

“Son of man, this is what the Lord GOD says: Tell every kind of bird and all the wild animals, ‘Assemble and come! Gather from all around to my sacrificial feast that I am slaughtering for you, a great feast on the mountains of Israel; you will eat flesh and drink blood.

He spoke to me: “Son of man, look with your eyes, listen with your ears, and pay attention to everything I am going to show you, for you have been brought here so that I might show it to you. Report everything you see to the house of Israel.”

a human face turned toward the palm tree on one side, and a lion's face turned toward it on the other. They were carved throughout the temple on all sides.

He said to me, “Son of man, this is the place of my throne and the place for the soles of my feet, where I will dwell among the Israelites forever. The house of Israel and their kings will no longer defile my holy name by their religious prostitution and by the corpses[fn] of their kings at their high places.[fn]

“As for you, son of man, describe the temple to the house of Israel, so that they may be ashamed of their iniquities. Let them measure its pattern,

Then he said to me, “Son of man, this is what the Lord GOD says: These are the statutes for the altar on the day it is constructed, so that burnt offerings may be sacrificed on it and blood may be splattered on it:

The LORD said to me, “Son of man, pay attention; look with your eyes and listen with your ears to everything I tell you about all the statutes and laws of the LORD's temple. Take careful note of the entrance of the temple along with all the exits of the sanctuary.

“A priest may not come near a dead person so that he becomes defiled. However, he may defile himself for a father, a mother, a son, a daughter, a brother, or an unmarried sister.

He asked me, “Do you see this, son of man? ” Then he led me back to the bank of the river.

At that moment the fingers of a man's hand appeared and began writing on the plaster of the king's palace wall next to the lampstand. As the king watched the hand[fn] that was writing,

“All the administrators of the kingdom ​— ​the prefects, satraps, advisers, and governors ​— ​have agreed that the king should establish an ordinance and enforce an edict that, for thirty days, anyone who petitions any god or man except you, the king, will be thrown into the lions' den.

So they approached the king and asked about his edict: “Didn't you sign an edict that for thirty days any person who petitions any god or man except you, the king, will be thrown into the lions' den? ”

The king answered, “As a law of the Medes and Persians, the order stands[fn] and is irrevocable.”

“The first was like a lion but had eagle's wings. I continued watching until its wings were torn off. It was lifted up from the ground, set on its feet like a man, and given a human mind.

“While I was considering the horns, suddenly another horn, a little one, came up among them, and three of the first horns were uprooted before it. And suddenly in this horn there were eyes like the eyes of a human and a mouth that was speaking arrogantly.

“I continued watching in the night visions,

and suddenly one like a son of man

was coming with the clouds of heaven.

He approached the Ancient of Days

and was escorted before him.

So he approached where I was standing; when he came near, I was terrified and fell facedown. “Son of man,” he said to me, “understand that the vision refers to the time of the end.”

Suddenly one with human likeness touched my lips. I opened my mouth and said to the one standing in front of me, “My lord, because of the vision, anguish overwhelms me and I am powerless.

Then the one with a human appearance touched me again and strengthened me.

So they called out to the LORD, “Please, LORD, don't let us perish because of this man's life, and don't charge us with innocent blood! For you, LORD, have done just as you pleased.”

A pronouncement:

The word of the LORD concerning Israel.

A declaration of the LORD,

who stretched out the heavens,

laid the foundation of the earth,

and formed the spirit of man within him.

“And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers. Otherwise, I will come and strike the land[fn] with a curse.”
