LXX Concordance for ἄνδρα

He said to the woman:

I will intensify your labor pains;

you will bear children with painful effort.

Your desire will be for your husband,

yet he will rule over you.

Lamech said to his wives:

Adah and Zillah, hear my voice;

wives of Lamech, pay attention to my words.

For I killed a man for wounding me,

a young man for striking me.

“Look, I've got two daughters who haven't been intimate with a man. I'll bring them out to you, and you can do whatever you want[fn] to them. However, don't do anything to these men, because they have come under the protection of my roof.”

But Leah replied to her, “Isn't it enough that you have taken my husband? Now you also want to take my son's mandrakes? ”

“Well then,” Rachel said, “he can sleep with you tonight in exchange for your son's mandrakes.”

“When an ox[fn] gores a man or a woman to death, the ox must be stoned, and its meat may not be eaten, but the ox's owner is innocent.

At the LORD's command they were registered under the direction of Moses, each one according to his work and transportation duty, and his assignment was as the LORD commanded Moses.

“The priest will require the woman to take an oath and will say to her, ‘If no man has slept with you, if you have not gone astray and become defiled while under your husband's authority, be unaffected by this bitter water that brings a curse.

“When he makes her drink the water, if she has defiled herself and been unfaithful to her husband, the water that brings a curse will enter her to cause bitter suffering; her belly will swell, and her womb will shrivel. She will become a curse among her people.

“Send men to scout out the land of Canaan I am giving to the Israelites. Send one man who is a leader among them from each of their ancestral tribes.”

While the Israelites were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering wood on the Sabbath day.

“The plan seemed good to me, so I selected twelve men from among you, one man for each tribe.

“If a man is discovered having sexual relations with another man's wife, both the man who had sex with the woman and the woman must die. You must purge the evil from Israel.

“If two men are fighting with each other, and the wife of one steps in to rescue her husband from the one striking him, and she puts out her hand and grabs his genitals,

“The most sensitive and refined woman among you, who would not venture to set the sole of her foot on the ground because of her refinement and sensitivity, will begrudge the husband she embraces, her son, and her daughter,

“In the morning, present yourselves tribe by tribe. The tribe the LORD selects is to come forward clan by clan. The clan the LORD selects is to come forward family by family. The family the LORD selects is to come forward man by man.

He had the clans of Judah come forward, and the Zerahite clan was selected. He had the Zerahite clan come forward by heads of families,[fn] and Zabdi was selected.

The spies saw a man coming out of the town and said to him, “Please show us how to get into town, and we will show you kindness.”

“I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations Joshua left when he died.

Then the Israelites cried out to the LORD, and he raised up Ehud son of Gera, a left-handed Benjaminite,[fn] as a deliverer for them. The Israelites sent him with the tribute for King Eglon of Moab.

He told them, “Follow me, because the LORD has handed over your enemies, the Moabites, to you.” So they followed him, captured the fords of the Jordan leading to Moab, and did not allow anyone to cross over.

When Barak arrived in pursuit of Sisera, Jael went out to greet him and said to him, “Come and I will show you the man you are looking for.” So he went in with her, and there was Sisera lying dead with a tent peg through his temple!

the LORD sent a prophet to them. He said to them, “This is what the LORD God of Israel says: ‘I brought you out of Egypt and out of the place of slavery.

“But I will be with you,” the LORD said to him. “You will strike Midian down as if it were one man.”

So Gideon sent all the Israelites to their tents but kept the three hundred troops, who took the provisions and their rams' horns. The camp of Midian was below him in the valley.

“Please speak in the hearing of all the citizens of Shechem, ‘Is it better for you that seventy men, all the sons of Jerubbaal, rule over you or that one man rule over you? ' Remember that I am your own flesh and blood.”[fn]

At the end of two months, she returned to her father, and he kept the vow he had made about her. And she had never been intimate with a man. Now it became a custom in Israel

So Manoah got up and followed his wife. When he came to the man, he asked, “Are you the man who spoke to my wife? ”

“I am,” he said.

On the fourth[fn] day they said to Samson's wife, “Persuade your husband to explain the riddle to us, or we will burn you and your father's family to death. Did you invite us here to rob us? ”

So they sat down and the two of them ate and drank together. Then the girl's father said to the man, “Please agree to stay overnight and enjoy yourself.”

When he looked up and saw the traveler in the city square, the old man asked, “Where are you going, and where do you come from? ”

While they were enjoying themselves, all of a sudden, wicked men of the city surrounded the house and beat on the door. They said to the old man who was the owner of the house, “Bring out the man who came to your house so we can have sex with him! ”

Everyone who saw it said, “Nothing like this has ever happened or has been seen since the day the Israelites came out of the land of Egypt until now.[fn] Think it over, discuss it, and speak up! ”

They found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead four hundred young virgins, who had not been intimate with a man, and they brought them to the camp at Shiloh in the land of Canaan.

Boaz answered her, “Everything you have done for your mother-in-law since your husband's death has been fully reported to me: how you left your father and mother and your native land, and how you came to a people you didn't previously know.

So she lay down at his feet until morning but got up while it was still dark.[fn] Then Boaz said, “Don't let it be known that a[fn] woman came to the threshing floor.”

“If one person sins against another, God can intercede for him, but if a person sins against the LORD, who can intercede for him? ” But they would not listen to their father, since the LORD intended to kill them.

“Any man from your family I do not cut off from my altar will bring grief[fn] and sadness to you. All your descendants will die violently.[fn][fn]

“At this time tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin. Anoint him ruler over my people Israel. He will save them from the Philistines because I have seen the affliction of my people, for their cry has come to me.”

“The Spirit of the LORD will come powerfully on you, you will prophesy with them, and you will be transformed.

Saul counted them at Bezek. There were three hundred thousand[fn] Israelites and thirty thousand[fn] men from Judah.

Then Samuel said to all Israel, “I have carefully listened to everything you said to me and placed a king over you.

Saul said, “Let's go down after the Philistines tonight and plunder them until morning. Don't let even one remain! ”

“Do whatever you want,” the troops replied.

But the priest said, “Let's approach God here.”

The conflict with the Philistines was fierce all of Saul's days, so whenever Saul noticed any strong or valiant man, he enlisted him.

“Let our lord command your servants here in your presence to look for someone who knows how to play the lyre. Whenever the evil spirit from God comes on you, that person can play the lyre, and you will feel better.”

He stood and shouted to the Israelite battle formations, “Why do you come out to line up in battle formation? ” He asked them, “Am I not a Philistine and are you not servants of Saul? Choose one of your men and have him come down against me.

Then the Philistine said, “I defy the ranks of Israel today. Send me a man so we can fight each other! ”

Instead, he took his staff in his hand and chose five smooth stones from the wadi and put them in the pouch, in his shepherd's bag. Then, with his sling in his hand, he approached the Philistine.

“Look! You can see the man is crazy,” Achish said to his servants. “Why did you bring him to me?

Whenever David attacked the land, he did not leave a single person alive, either man or woman, but he took flocks, herds, donkeys, camels, and clothing. Then he came back to Achish,

David did not let a man or woman live to be brought to Gath, for he said, “Or they will inform on us and say, ‘This is what David did.' ” This was David's custom during the whole time he stayed in the Philistine territory.

The Philistines gathered and camped at Shunem. So Saul gathered all Israel, and they camped at Gilboa.

Then Saul asked her, “What does he look like? ”

“An old man is coming up,” she replied. “He's wearing a robe.” Then Saul knew that it was Samuel, and he knelt low with his face to the ground and paid homage.

The Philistine commanders, however, were enraged with Achish and told him, “Send that man back and let him return to the place you assigned him. He must not go down with us into battle only to become our adversary during the battle. What better way could he ingratiate himself with his master than with the heads of our men?

They also had kidnapped the women and everyone[fn] in it from youngest to oldest. They had killed no one but had carried them off as they went on their way.

David's men found an Egyptian in the open country and brought him to David. They gave him some bread to eat and water to drink.

“How much more when wicked men kill a righteous man in his own house on his own bed! So now, should I not require his blood from you and purge you from the earth? ”

When Uriah's wife heard that her husband, Uriah, had died, she mourned for him.[fn]

She brought the pan and set it down in front of him, but he refused to eat. Amnon said, “Everyone leave me! ” And everyone left him.

When a person approached to pay homage to him, Absalom reached out his hand, took hold of him, and kissed him.

“and bring all the people back to you. When everyone returns except the man you're looking for, all[fn] the people will be at peace.”

the watchman saw another man running. He called out to the gatekeeper, “Look! Another man is running alone! ”

“This one is also bringing good news,” said the king.

All the men of Judah responded to the men of Israel, “Because the king is our relative. Why does this make you angry? Have we ever eaten anything of the king's or been honored at all? ”[fn]

The king said to Amasa, “Summon the men of Judah to me within three days and be here yourself.”

He also killed an Egyptian, an impressive man. Even though the Egyptian had a spear in his hand, Benaiah went down to him with a staff, snatched the spear out of the Egyptian's hand, and then killed him with his own spear.

“As for me, I am going the way of all of the earth. Be strong and be a man,

As the king was passing by, he cried out to the king and said, “Your servant marched out into the middle of the battle. Suddenly, a man turned aside and brought someone to me and said, ‘Guard this man! If he is ever missing, it will be your life in place of his life, or you will weigh out seventy-five pounds[fn] of silver.'

The prophet said to him, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Because you released from your hand the man I had set apart for destruction, it will be your life in place of his life and your people in place of his people.' ”

Then she said to her husband, “I know that the one who often passes by here is a holy man of God,

She summoned her husband and said, “Please send me one of the servants and one of the donkeys, so I can hurry to the man of God and come back again.”

So Elisha said to Gehazi, “Tuck your mantle under your belt, take my staff with you, and go. If you meet anyone, don't stop to greet him, and if a man greets you, don't answer him. Then place my staff on the boy's face.”

When the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his clothes and asked, “Am I God, killing and giving life, that this man expects me to cure a man of his skin disease? Recognize[fn] that he is only picking a fight with me.”

Then Elisha said to them, “This is not the way, and this is not the city. Follow me, and I will take you to the man you're looking for.” And he led them to Samaria.

Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. The king sent a man ahead of him, but before the messenger got to him, Elisha said to the elders, “Do you see how this murderer has sent someone to remove my head? Look, when the messenger comes, shut the door to keep him out. Isn't the sound of his master's feet behind him? ”

When Jehu came out to his master's servants, they asked, “Is everything all right? Why did this crazy person come to you? ”

Then he said to them, “You know the sort and their ranting.”

So the overseer of the palace, the overseer of the city, the elders, and the guardians sent a message to Jehu: “We are your servants, and we will do whatever you tell us. We will not make anyone king. Do whatever you think is right.”[fn]

Then Jehu ordered, “Take them alive.” So they took them alive and then slaughtered them at the pit of Beth-eked ​— ​forty-two men. He didn't spare any of them.

Once, as the Israelites were burying a man, suddenly they saw a raiding party, so they threw the man into Elisha's tomb. When he touched Elisha's bones, the man revived and stood up!

He defiled Topheth, which is in Ben Hinnom Valley, so that no one could sacrifice his son or daughter in the fire[fn] to Molech.

He also killed an Egyptian who was seven and a half feet tall.[fn] Even though the Egyptian had a spear in his hand like a weaver's beam, Benaiah went down to him with a staff, snatched the spear out of the Egyptian's hand, and then killed him with his own spear.

he allowed no one to oppress them;

he rebuked kings on their behalf:

Therefore, send me an artisan who is skilled in engraving to work with gold, silver, bronze, and iron, and with purple, crimson, and blue yarn. He will work with the artisans who are with me in Judah and Jerusalem, appointed by my father David.

I have now sent Huram-abi,[fn] a skillful man who has understanding.

I also shook the folds of my robe and said, “May God likewise shake from his house and property everyone who doesn't keep this promise. May he be shaken out and have nothing! ”

The whole assembly said, “Amen,” and they praised the LORD. Then the people did as they had promised.

Have I not wept for those who have fallen on hard times?

Has my soul not grieved for the needy?

God does not need to examine a person further,

that one should[fn] approach him in court.

You destroy those who tell lies;

the LORD abhors violent and treacherous people.

Let your hand be with the man at your right hand,

with the son of man

you have made strong for yourself.

Do not let a slanderer stay in the land.

Let evil relentlessly[fn] hunt down a violent man.

If they say ​— ​“Come with us!

Let's set an ambush and kill someone.[fn]

Let's attack some innocent person just for fun![fn]

A wicked man's iniquities will trap him;

he will become tangled in the ropes of his own sin.

Idle hands make one poor,

but diligent hands bring riches.

Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning,

but a rod is for the back of the one who lacks sense.

A wife of noble character[fn] is her husband's crown,

but a wife who causes shame

is like rottenness in his bones.

It is certainly not good to fine an innocent person

or to beat a noble for his honesty.[fn]

A person's spirit can endure sickness,

but who can survive a broken spirit?

Strike a mocker, and the inexperienced learn a lesson;

rebuke the discerning, and he gains knowledge.

Many a person proclaims his own loyalty,

but who can find a trustworthy person?

The one who sows injustice will reap disaster,

and the rod of his fury will be destroyed.

Do you see a person skilled in his work?

He will stand in the presence of kings.

He will not stand in the presence of the unknown.

Do you see a person who is wise in his own eyes?

There is more hope for a fool than for him.

Someone burdened by bloodguilt[fn]

will be a fugitive until death.

Let no one help him.

It is not good to show partiality —

yet even a courageous person may sin for a piece of bread.

Do you see someone who speaks too soon?

There is more hope for a fool than for him.

A person's pride will humble him,

but a humble spirit will gain honor.

It is better to listen to rebuke from a wise person

than to listen to the song of fools,

Now a poor wise man was found in the city, and he delivered the city by his wisdom. Yet no one remembered that poor man.

“Look, you strong man! The LORD is about to shake you violently. He will take hold of you,

“Rejoice, childless one, who did not give birth;

burst into song and shout,

you who have not been in labor!

For the children of the desolate one will be more

than the children of the married woman,”

says the LORD.

Roam through the streets of Jerusalem.

Investigate;[fn]

search in her squares.

If you find one person,

any who acts justly,

who pursues faithfulness,

then I will forgive her.

“I will smash them against each other, fathers and sons alike ​— ​this is the LORD's declaration. I will allow no mercy, pity, or compassion to keep me from destroying them.' ”

Woe is me, my mother,

that you gave birth to me,

a man who incites dispute and conflict

in all the land.

I did not lend or borrow,

yet everyone curses me.

“I will set apart destroyers against you,

each with his weapons.

They will cut down the choicest of your cedars

and throw them into the fire.

Therefore, this is what the LORD says concerning Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah:

They will not mourn for him, saying,

“Woe, my brother! ” or “Woe, my sister! ”

They will not mourn for him, saying,

“Woe, lord! Woe, his majesty! ”

This is what the LORD says:

Record this man as childless,

a man who will not be successful in his lifetime.

None of his descendants will succeed

in sitting on the throne of David

or ruling again in Judah.

As a result, each was to let his male and female Hebrew slaves go free, and no one was to enslave his fellow Judean.

With you I will smash man and woman;

with you I will smash the old man and the youth;

with you I will smash the young man and the young woman.

“I will make your tongue stick to the roof of your mouth, and you will be mute and unable to be a mediator for[fn] them, for they are a rebellious house.

Then the glory of the God of Israel rose from above the cherub where it had been, to the threshold of the temple. He called to the man clothed in linen and carrying writing equipment.

The LORD spoke to the man clothed in linen and said, “Go inside the wheelwork beneath the cherubim. Fill your hands with blazing coals from among the cherubim and scatter them over the city.” So he went in as I watched.

You are the daughter of your mother, who despised her husband and children. You are the sister of your sisters, who despised their husbands and children. Your mother was a Hethite and your father an Amorite.

“I searched for a man among them who would repair the wall and stand in the gap before me on behalf of the land so that I might not destroy it, but I found no one.

“At my table you will eat your fill of horses and riders, of mighty men and all the warriors. This is the declaration of the Lord GOD.'

Then Arioch quickly brought Daniel before the king and said to him, “I have found a man among the Judean exiles who can let the king know the interpretation.”

She will pursue her lovers but not catch them;

she will look for them but not find them.

Then she will think,

“I will go back to my former husband,

for then it was better for me than now.”

Grieve like a young woman dressed in sackcloth,

mourning for the husband of her youth.

They covet fields and seize them;

they also take houses.

They deprive a man of his home,

a person of his inheritance.

“Sword, awake against my shepherd,

against the man who is my associate —

this is the declaration of the LORD of Armies.

Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered;

I will turn my hand against the little ones.
