Now the girl was very beautiful, a virgin — no man had been intimate with her. She went down to the spring, filled her jug, and came up.
Jacob answered Rebekah his mother, “Look, my brother Esau is a hairy man, but I am a man with smooth skin.
Now Joseph had been taken to Egypt. An Egyptian named Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and the captain of the guards, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had brought him there.
The LORD was with Joseph, and he became a successful man, serving[fn] in the household of his Egyptian master.
“He saw that his resting place was good
and that the land was pleasant,
so he leaned his shoulder to bear a load
and became a forced laborer.
“When men get in a fight and hit a pregnant woman so that her children are born prematurely but there is no injury, the one who hit her must be fined as the woman's husband demands from him, and he must pay according to judicial assessment.
So the Israelites brought a freewill offering to the LORD, all the men and women whose hearts prompted them to bring something for all the work that the LORD, through Moses, had commanded to be done.
After Moses gave an order, they sent a proclamation throughout the camp: “Let no man or woman make anything else as an offering for the sanctuary.” So the people stopped.
“If a man sleeps with a woman and has an emission of semen, both of them are to bathe with water, and they will remain unclean until evening.
“A man or a woman who is[fn] a medium or a spiritist must be put to death. They are to be stoned; their death is their own fault.”
These are the men Moses and Aaron registered, with the assistance of the twelve leaders of Israel; each represented his ancestral family.
“The Israelites are to camp by their military divisions, each man with his encampment and under his banner.
“Tell the Israelites: When a man or woman commits any sin against another, that person acts unfaithfully toward the LORD and is guilty.
“Each one's holy contribution is his to give; what each one gives to the priest will be his.”
“Speak to the Israelites and tell them: When a man or woman makes a special vow, a Nazirite vow, to consecrate himself to the LORD,
“A person who is clean is to take hyssop, dip it in the water, and sprinkle the tent, all the furnishings, and the people who were there. He is also to sprinkle the one who touched a bone, a grave, a corpse, or a person who had been killed.
“and her husband hears about it and says nothing to her when he finds out, her vows are binding, and the obligations she put herself under are binding.
“But if her husband prohibits her when he hears about it, he will cancel her vow that is binding or the rash commitment she herself made, and the LORD will release her.
“and her husband hears about it, says nothing to her, and does not prohibit her, all her vows are binding, and every obligation she put herself under is binding.
“But if her husband cancels them on the day he hears about it, nothing that came from her lips, whether her vows or her obligation, is binding. Her husband has canceled them, and the LORD will release her.
“So we have presented to the LORD an offering of the gold articles each man found — armlets, bracelets, rings, earrings, and necklaces — to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD.”
“If a man or woman among you in one of your towns that the LORD your God will give you is discovered doing evil in the sight of the LORD your God and violating his covenant
“A woman is not to wear male clothing, and a man is not to put on a woman's garment, for everyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD your God.
“and the second man hates her, writes her a divorce certificate, hands it to her, and sends her away from his house or if he dies,
“the first husband who sent her away may not marry her again after she has been defiled, because that would be detestable to the LORD. You must not bring guilt on the land the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.
“You will become engaged to a woman, but another man will rape her. You will build a house but not live in it. You will plant a vineyard but not enjoy its fruit.
“All of you are standing today before the LORD your God — your leaders, tribes, elders, officials, all the men of Israel,
“Be sure there is no man, woman, clan, or tribe among you today whose heart turns away from the LORD our God to go and worship the gods of those nations. Be sure there is no root among you bearing poisonous and bitter fruit.
This was the allotment for the tribe of Manasseh as Joseph's firstborn. Gilead and Bashan were given to Machir, the firstborn of Manasseh and the father of Gilead, because he was a man of war.
Then the man went to the land of the Hittites, built a town, and named it Luz. That is its name still today.
Whenever the Israelites planted crops, the Midianites, Amalekites, and the people of the east came and attacked them.
They said to each other, “Who did this? ” After they made a thorough investigation, they said, “Gideon son of Joash did it.”
The LORD said to Gideon, “I will deliver you with the three hundred men who lapped and hand the Midianites over to you. But everyone else is to go home.”
When Gideon arrived, there was a man telling his friend about a dream. He said, “Listen, I had a dream: a loaf of barley bread came tumbling into the Midianite camp, struck a tent, and it fell. The loaf turned the tent upside down so that it collapsed.”
Then the men of Israel were called from Naphtali, Asher, and Manasseh, and they pursued the Midianites.
Gideon sent messengers throughout the hill country of Ephraim with this message: “Come down to intercept the Midianites and take control of the watercourses ahead of them as far as Beth-barah and the Jordan.” So all the men of Ephraim were called out, and they took control of the watercourses as far as Beth-barah and the Jordan.
The men of Ephraim said to him, “Why have you done this to us, not calling us when you went to fight against the Midianites? ” And they argued with him violently.
Zebah and Zalmunna said, “Get up and strike us down yourself, for a man is judged by his strength.” So Gideon got up, killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and took the crescent ornaments that were on the necks of their camels.
Then the Israelites said to Gideon, “Rule over us, you as well as your sons and your grandsons, for you delivered us from the power of Midian.”
Then he said to them, “Let me make a request of you: Everyone give me an earring from his plunder.” Now the enemy had gold earrings because they were Ishmaelites.
They said, “We agree to give them.” So they spread out a cloak, and everyone threw an earring from his plunder on it.
After Abimelech, Tola son of Puah, son of Dodo became judge and began to deliver Israel. He was from Issachar and lived in Shamir in the hill country of Ephraim.
The rulers[fn] of Gilead said to one another, “Which man will begin the fight against the Ammonites? He will be the leader of all the inhabitants of Gilead.”
Then Jephthah said to them, “My people and I had a bitter conflict with the Ammonites. So I called for you, but you didn't deliver me from their power.
There was a certain man from Zorah, from the family of Dan, whose name was Manoah; his wife was unable to conceive and had no children.
God listened to Manoah, and the angel of God came again to the woman. She was sitting in the field, and her husband, Manoah, was not with her.
The woman ran quickly to her husband and told him, “The man who came to me the other day has just come back! ”
So Manoah got up and followed his wife. When he came to the man, he asked, “Are you the man who spoke to my wife? ”
“I am,” he said.
So the men of Judah said, “Why have you attacked us? ”
They replied, “We have come to tie Samson up and pay him back for what he did to us.”
The Philistine leaders went to her and said, “Persuade him to tell you[fn] where his great strength comes from, so we can overpower him, tie him up, and make him helpless. Each of us will then give you 1,100 pieces of silver.”
This man Micah had a shrine, and he made an ephod and household idols, and installed one of his sons to be his priest.
In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did whatever seemed right to him.
The man left the town of Bethlehem in Judah to stay wherever he could find a place. On his way he came to Micah's home in the hill country of Ephraim.
In those days, when there was no king in Israel, a Levite staying in a remote part of the hill country of Ephraim acquired a woman from Bethlehem in Judah as his concubine.
Then her husband got up and followed her to speak kindly to her and bring her back. He had his servant with him and a pair of donkeys. So she brought him to her father's house, and when the girl's father saw him, he gladly welcomed him.
The man got up to go, but his father-in-law persuaded him, so he stayed and spent the night there again.
The man got up to go with his concubine and his servant, when his father-in-law, the girl's father, said to him, “Look, night is coming. Please spend the night. See, the day is almost over. Spend the night here, enjoy yourself, then you can get up early tomorrow for your journey and go home.”
But the man was unwilling to spend the night. He got up, departed, and arrived opposite Jebus (that is, Jerusalem). The man had his two saddled donkeys and his concubine with him.
They stopped[fn] to go in and spend the night in Gibeah. The Levite went in and sat down in the city square, but no one took them into their home to spend the night.
In the evening, an old man came in from his work in the field. He was from the hill country of Ephraim, but he was residing in Gibeah where the people were Benjaminites.
When he looked up and saw the traveler in the city square, the old man asked, “Where are you going, and where do you come from? ”
He answered him, “We're traveling from Bethlehem in Judah to the remote hill country of Ephraim, where I am from. I went to Bethlehem in Judah, and now I'm going to the house of the LORD.[fn] No one has taken me into his home,
“Welcome! ” said the old man. “I'll take care of everything you need. Only don't spend the night in the square.”
The owner of the house went out and said to them, “Please don't do this evil, my brothers. After all, this man has come into my house. Don't commit this horrible outrage.
But the men would not listen to him, so the man seized his concubine and took her outside to them. They raped her and abused her all night until morning. At daybreak they let her go.
“Get up,” he told her. “Let's go.” But there was no response. So the man put her on his donkey and set out for home.
All the Israelites from Dan to Beer-sheba and from the land of Gilead came out, and the community assembled as one body before the LORD at Mizpah.
The Levite, the husband of the murdered woman, answered, “I went to Gibeah in Benjamin with my concubine to spend the night.
Then all the people stood united and said, “None of us will go to his tent or return to his house.
The Israelites, apart from Benjamin, mobilized four hundred thousand armed men, every one an experienced warrior.
The men of Israel went out to fight against Benjamin and took their battle positions against Gibeah.
But the Israelite troops rallied and again took their battle positions in the same place where they positioned themselves on the first day.
So all the men of Israel got up from their places and took their battle positions at Baal-tamar, while the Israelites in ambush charged out of their places west of[fn] Geba.
Then the Benjaminites realized they had been defeated.
The men of Israel had retreated before Benjamin, because they were confident in the ambush they had set against Gibeah.
the men of Israel would return to the battle. When Benjamin had begun to strike them down, killing about thirty men of Israel, they said, “They're defeated before us, just as they were in the first battle.”
Then the men of Israel returned, and the men of Benjamin were terrified when they realized that disaster had struck them.
The men of Israel turned back against the other Benjaminites and killed them with their swords — the entire city, the animals, and everything that remained. They also burned all the cities that remained.
The men of Israel had sworn an oath at Mizpah: “None of us will give his daughter to a Benjaminite in marriage.”
They asked, “Which city among the tribes of Israel didn't come to the LORD at Mizpah? ” It turned out that no one from Jabesh-gilead had come to the camp and the assembly.
For when the roll was called, no men were there from the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead.
“Watch, and when you see the young women of Shiloh come out to perform the dances, each of you leave the vineyards and catch a wife for yourself from the young women of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.
“When their fathers or brothers come to us and protest, we will tell them, ‘Show favor to them, since we did not get enough wives for each of them in the battle. You didn't actually give the women to them, so[fn] you are not guilty of breaking your oath.' ”
At that time, each of the Israelites returned from there to his own tribe and family. Each returned from there to his own inheritance.
In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did whatever seemed right to him.
During the time[fn] of the judges, there was a famine in the land. A man left Bethlehem in Judah with his wife and two sons to stay in the territory of Moab for a while.
Now Naomi had a relative on her husband's side. He was a prominent man of noble character from Elimelech's family. His name was Boaz.
Then Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, “May the LORD bless him because he has not abandoned his kindness to the living or the dead.” Naomi continued, “The man is a close relative. He is one of our family redeemers.”
At an earlier period in Israel, a man removed his sandal and gave it to the other party in order to make any matter legally binding concerning the right of redemption or the exchange of property. This was the method of legally binding a transaction in Israel.
“Hannah, why are you crying? ” her husband, Elkanah, would ask. “Why won't you eat? Why are you troubled? Am I not better to you than ten sons? ”
Her husband, Elkanah, replied, “Do what you think is best, and stay here until you've weaned him. May the LORD confirm your[fn] word.” So Hannah stayed there and nursed her son until she weaned him.
If that person said to him, “The fat must be burned first; then you can take whatever you want for yourself,” the servant would reply, “No, I insist that you hand it over right now. If you don't, I'll take it by force! ”
“If one person sins against another, God can intercede for him, but if a person sins against the LORD, who can intercede for him? ” But they would not listen to their father, since the LORD intended to kill them.
The Philistines lined up in battle formation against Israel, and as the battle intensified, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who struck down about four thousand men on the battlefield.
So the Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated, and each man fled to his tent. The slaughter was severe — thirty thousand of the Israelite foot soldiers fell.
That same day, a Benjaminite man ran from the battle and came to Shiloh. His clothes were torn, and there was dirt on his head.
The man said to Eli, “I'm the one who came from the battle.[fn] I fled from there today.”
“What happened, my son? ” Eli asked.
The messenger answered, “Israel has fled from the Philistines, and also there was a great slaughter among the people. Your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are both dead, and the ark of God has been captured.”
Eli's daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and about to give birth. When she heard the news about the capture of God's ark and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband, she collapsed and gave birth because her labor pains came on her.
There was a prominent man of Benjamin named Kish son of Abiel, son of Zeror, son of Becorath, son of Aphiah, son of a Benjaminite.
He had a son named Saul, an impressive young man. There was no one more impressive among the Israelites than he. He stood a head taller than anyone else.[fn]
They again inquired of the LORD, “Has the man come here yet? ”
The LORD replied, “There he is, hidden among the supplies.”
He took a team of oxen, cut them in pieces, and sent them throughout the territory of Israel by messengers who said, “This is what will be done to the ox of anyone who doesn't march behind Saul and Samuel.” As a result, the terror of the LORD fell on the people, and they went out united.
The men of Israel saw that they were in trouble because the troops were in a difficult situation. They hid in caves, in thickets, among rocks, and in holes and cisterns.
One of the young men answered, “I have seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem who knows how to play the lyre. He is also a valiant man, a warrior, eloquent, handsome, and the LORD is with him.”
But Saul replied, “You can't go fight this Philistine. You're just a youth, and he's been a warrior since he was young.”
Saul's servants reported these words directly to David, but he replied, “Is it trivial in your sight to become the king's son-in-law? I am a poor commoner.”
David called to Abner, “You're a man, aren't you? Who in Israel is your equal? So why didn't you protect your lord the king when one of the people came to destroy him?
David slaughtered them from twilight until the evening of the next day. None of them escaped, except four hundred young men who got on camels and fled.
but all the corrupt and worthless men among those who had gone with David argued, “Because they didn't go with us, we will not give any of the plunder we recovered to them except for each man's wife and children. They may take them and go.”
all their brave men set out, journeyed all night, and retrieved the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth-shan. When they arrived at Jabesh, they burned the bodies there.
On the third day a man with torn clothes and dust on his head came from Saul's camp. When he came to David, he fell to the ground and paid homage.
Her husband followed her, weeping all the way to Bahurim. Abner said to him, “Go back.” So he went back.
So the king asked, “Is there anyone left of Saul's family that I can show the kindness of God to? ”
Ziba said to the king, “There is still Jonathan's son who was injured in both feet.”
David was infuriated with the man and said to Nathan, “As the LORD lives, the man who did this deserves to die!
Nathan replied to David, “You are the man! This is what the LORD God of Israel says: ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I rescued you from Saul.
Amnon had a friend named Jonadab, a son of David's brother Shimeah. Jonadab was a very shrewd man,
So Absalom's young men did to Amnon just as Absalom had commanded. Then all the rest of the king's sons got up, and each fled on his mule.
No man in all Israel was as handsome and highly praised as Absalom. From the sole of his foot to the top of his head, he did not have a single flaw.
David was climbing the slope of the Mount of Olives, weeping as he ascended. His head was covered, and he was walking barefoot. All of the people with him covered their heads and went up, weeping as they ascended.
When King David got to Bahurim, a man belonging to the family of the house of Saul was just coming out. His name was Shimei son of Gera, and he was yelling curses as he approached.
“The LORD has paid you back for all the blood of the house of Saul in whose place you became king, and the LORD has handed the kingdom over to your son Absalom. Look, you are in trouble because you're a man of bloodshed! ”
“Not at all,” Hushai answered Absalom. “I am on the side of the one that the LORD, this people, and all the men of Israel have chosen. I will stay with him.
Hushai continued, “You know your father and his men. They are warriors and are desperate like a wild bear robbed of her cubs. Your father is an experienced soldier who won't spend the night with the people.
Since the LORD had decreed that Ahithophel's good advice be undermined in order to bring about Absalom's ruin, Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The advice of Hushai the Archite is better than Ahithophel's advice.”
David had arrived at Mahanaim by the time Absalom crossed the Jordan with all the men of Israel.
One of the men saw him and informed Joab. He said, “I just saw Absalom hanging in an oak tree! ”
They took Absalom, threw him into a large pit in the forest, and raised up a huge mound of stones over him. And all Israel fled, each to his tent.
Joab replied to him, “You are not the man to take good news today. You may do it another day, but today you aren't taking good news, because the king's son is dead.”
David was sitting between the city gates when the watchman went up to the roof of the city gate and over to the wall. The watchman looked out and saw a man running alone.
the watchman saw another man running. He called out to the gatekeeper, “Look! Another man is running alone! ”
“This one is also bringing good news,” said the king.
The watchman said, “The way the first man runs looks to me like the way Ahimaaz son of Zadok runs.”
“This is a good man; he comes with good news,” the king commented.
“Now get up! Go out and encourage[fn] your soldiers, for I swear by the LORD that if you don't go out, not a man will remain with you tonight. This will be worse for you than all the trouble that has come to you from your youth until now! ”
So the king got up and sat in the city gate, and all the people were told, “Look, the king is sitting in the city gate.” Then they all came into the king's presence.
Meanwhile, each Israelite had fled to his tent.
David answered, “Sons of Zeruiah, do we agree on anything? Have you become my adversary today? Should any man be killed in Israel today? Am I not aware that today I'm king over Israel? ”
Barzillai was a very old man — eighty years old — and since he was a very wealthy man, he had provided for the needs of the king while he stayed in Mahanaim.
Suddenly, all the men of Israel came to the king. They asked him, “Why did our brothers, the men of Judah, take you away secretly and transport the king and his household across the Jordan, along with all of David's men? ”
All the men of Judah responded to the men of Israel, “Because the king is our relative. Why does this make you angry? Have we ever eaten anything of the king's or been honored at all? ”[fn]
The men of Israel answered the men of Judah, “We have ten shares in the king, so we have a greater claim to David than you. Why then do you despise us? Weren't we the first to speak of restoring our king? ” But the words of the men of Judah were harsher than those of the men of Israel.
Now a wicked man, a Benjaminite named Sheba son of Bichri, happened to be there. He blew the ram's horn and shouted:
We have no portion in David,
no inheritance in Jesse's son.
Each man to his tent,[fn] Israel!
So all the men of Israel deserted David and followed Sheba son of Bichri, but the men of Judah from the Jordan all the way to Jerusalem remained loyal to their king.
One of Joab's young men had stood over Amasa saying, “Whoever favors Joab and whoever is for David, follow Joab! ”
Now Amasa had been writhing in his blood in the middle of the highway, and the man had seen that all the troops stopped. So he moved Amasa from the highway to the field and threw a garment over him because he realized that all those who encountered Amasa were stopping.
When he was removed from the highway, all the men passed by and followed Joab to pursue Sheba son of Bichri.
“That is not the case. There is a man named Sheba son of Bichri, from the hill country of Ephraim, who has rebelled against King David. Deliver this one man, and I will withdraw from the city.”
The woman replied to Joab, “Watch! His head will be thrown over the wall to you.”
The woman went to all the people with her wise counsel, and they cut off the head of Sheba son of Bichri and threw it to Joab. So he blew the ram's horn, and they dispersed from the city, each to his own tent. Joab returned to the king in Jerusalem.
The Gibeonites said to him, “We are not asking for silver and gold from Saul or his family, and we cannot put anyone to death in Israel.”
“Whatever you say, I will do for you,” he said.
They replied to the king, “As for the man who annihilated us and plotted to destroy us so we would not exist within the whole territory of Israel,
At Gath there was still another battle. A huge man was there with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot — twenty-four in all. He, too, was descended from the giant.
The man who touches them
must be armed with iron and the shaft of a spear.
They will be completely burned up on the spot.
After him, Eleazar son of Dodo son of an Ahohite was among the three warriors with David when they defied the Philistines. The men of Israel retreated in the place they had gathered for battle,
Joab gave the king the total of the registration of the troops. There were eight hundred thousand valiant armed men[fn] from Israel and five hundred thousand men from Judah.
He was still speaking when Jonathan son of Abiathar the priest, suddenly arrived. Adonijah said, “Come in, for you are an important man, and you must be bringing good news.”
“and so that the LORD will fulfill his promise that he made to me: ‘If your sons take care to walk faithfully before me with all their heart and all their soul, you will never fail to have a man on the throne of Israel.'
“So don't let him go unpunished, for you are a wise man. You know how to deal with him to bring his gray head down to Sheol with blood.”
The king said to the priest Abiathar, “Go to your fields in Anathoth. Even though you deserve to die, I will not put you to death today, since you carried the ark of the Lord GOD in the presence of my father David and you suffered through all that my father suffered.”
“In addition, I will give you what you did not ask for: both riches and honor, so that no king will be your equal during your entire life.
He was a widow's son from the tribe of Naphtali, and his father was a man of Tyre, a bronze craftsman. Hiram had great skill, understanding, and knowledge to do every kind of bronze work. So he came to King Solomon and carried out all his work.
Therefore, LORD God of Israel,
keep what you promised
to your servant, my father David:
You will never fail to have a man
to sit before me on the throne of Israel,
if only your sons take care to walk before me
as you have walked before me.
I will establish your royal throne over Israel forever, as I promised your father David: You will never fail to have a man on the throne of Israel.
Now the man Jeroboam was capable, and Solomon noticed the young man because he was getting things done. So he appointed him over the entire labor force of the house of Joseph.
As the king was passing by, he cried out to the king and said, “Your servant marched out into the middle of the battle. Suddenly, a man turned aside and brought someone to me and said, ‘Guard this man! If he is ever missing, it will be your life in place of his life, or you will weigh out seventy-five pounds[fn] of silver.'
The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “There is still one man who can inquire of the LORD, but I hate him because he never prophesies good about me, but only disaster. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.”
“The king shouldn't say that! ” Jehoshaphat replied.
Now the king of Israel and King Jehoshaphat of Judah, clothed in royal attire, were each sitting on his own throne. They were on the threshing floor at the entrance to the gate of Samaria, and all the prophets were prophesying in front of them.
They replied, “A man came to meet us and said, ‘Go back to the king who sent you and declare to him, “This is what the LORD says: Is it because there is no God in Israel that you're sending these men to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore, you will not get up from your sickbed; you will certainly die.” ' ”
They replied, “A hairy man with a leather belt around his waist.”
He said, “It's Elijah the Tishbite.”
“This is blood! ” they exclaimed. “The kings have crossed swords[fn] and their men have killed one another. So, to the spoil, Moab! ”
They would destroy the cities, and each of them would throw a stone to cover every good piece of land. They would stop up every spring and cut down every good tree. This went on until only the buildings of Kir-hareseth were left. Then men with slings surrounded the city and attacked it.
So he asked, “Then what should be done for her? ”
Gehazi answered, “Well, she has no son, and her husband is old.”
A man from Baal-shalishah came to the man of God with his sack full of[fn] twenty loaves of barley bread from the first bread of the harvest. Elisha said, “Give it to the people to eat.”
Naaman, commander of the army for the king of Aram, was a man important to his master and highly regarded because through him, the LORD had given victory to Aram. The man was a valiant warrior, but he had a skin disease.
“And my heart didn't go[fn] when the man got down from his chariot to meet you,” Elisha said. “Is this a time to accept silver and clothing, olive orchards and vineyards, flocks and herds, and male and female slaves?
“Please let us go to the Jordan where we can each get a log and can build ourselves a place to live there.”
“Go,” he said.
Now four men with a skin disease were at the entrance to the city gate. They said to each other, “Why just sit here until we die?
So the diseased men got up at twilight to go to the Arameans' camp. When they came to the camp's edge, they discovered that no one was there,
for the Lord[fn] had caused the Aramean camp to hear the sound of chariots, horses, and a large army. The Arameans had said to each other, “The king of Israel must have hired the kings of the Hittites and the kings of Egypt to attack us.”
Then they said to each other, “We're not doing what is right. Today is a day of good news. If we are silent and wait until morning light, our punishment will catch up with us. So let's go tell the king's household.”
The diseased men came and called to the city's gatekeepers and told them, “We went to the Aramean camp and no one was there — no human sounds. There was nothing but tethered horses and donkeys, and the tents were intact.”
Jehu got into his chariot and went to Jezreel since Joram was laid up there and King Ahaziah of Judah had gone down to visit Joram.
“Get the chariot ready! ” Joram shouted, and they got it ready. Then King Joram of Israel and King Ahaziah of Judah set out, each in his own chariot, and met Jehu at the plot of land of Naboth the Jezreelite.
“Now, therefore, summon to me all the prophets of Baal, all his servants, and all his priests. None must be missing, for I have a great sacrifice for Baal. Whoever is missing will not live.” However, Jehu was acting deceptively in order to destroy the servants of Baal.
When he finished offering the burnt offering, Jehu said to the guards and officers, “Go in and kill them. Don't let anyone out.” So they struck them down with the sword. Then the guards and officers threw the bodies out and went into the inner room of the temple of Baal.
“Completely surround the king with weapons in hand. Anyone who approaches the ranks is to be put to death. Be with the king in all his daily tasks.”[fn]
So the commanders of hundreds did everything the priest Jehoiada commanded. They each brought their men — those coming on duty on the Sabbath and those going off duty — and came to the priest Jehoiada.
Then the guards stood with their weapons in hand surrounding the king — from the right side of the temple to the left side, by the altar and by the temple.
Then Joash said to the priests, “All the dedicated silver brought to the LORD's temple, census silver, silver from vows, and all silver voluntarily given for the LORD's temple —
“Now look, you are relying on Egypt, that splintered reed of a staff that will pierce the hand of anyone who grabs it and leans on it. This is what Pharaoh king of Egypt is to all who rely on him.
“Don't listen to Hezekiah, for this is what the king of Assyria says: ‘Make peace[fn] with me and surrender to me. Then each of you may eat from his own vine and his own fig tree, and each may drink water from his own cistern
Then the king went to the LORD's temple with all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, as well as the priests and the prophets — all the people from the youngest to the oldest. He read in their hearing all the words of the book of the covenant that had been found in the LORD's temple.
So he said, “Let him rest. Don't let anyone disturb his bones.” So they left his bones undisturbed with the bones of the prophet who came from Samaria.
So Jehoiakim gave the silver and the gold to Pharaoh, but at Pharaoh's command he taxed the land to give it. He exacted the silver and the gold from the common people, each according to his assessment, to give it to Pharaoh Neco.
When all the men of Israel in the valley saw that the army had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their cities and fled. So the Philistines came and settled in them.
all their brave men set out and retrieved the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons and brought them to Jabesh. They buried their bones under the oak[fn] in Jabesh and fasted seven days.
he sent his son Hadoram to King David to greet him and to congratulate him because David had fought against Hadadezer and defeated him, for Tou and Hadadezer had fought many wars. Hadoram brought all kinds of gold, silver, and bronze items.
There was still another battle at Gath where there was a man of extraordinary stature with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot — twenty-four in all. He, too, was descended from the giant.[fn]
“But a son will be born to you; he will be a man of rest. I will give him rest from all his surrounding enemies, for his name will be Solomon,[fn] and I will give peace and quiet to Israel during his reign.
From the Hebronites: Jerijah was the head of the Hebronites, according to the family records of his ancestors. A search was made in the fortieth year of David's reign and strong, capable men were found among them at Jazer in Gilead.
He is the son of a woman from the daughters of Dan. His father is a man of Tyre. He knows how to work with gold, silver, bronze, iron, stone, and wood, with purple, blue, crimson yarn, and fine linen. He knows how to do all kinds of engraving and to execute any design that may be given him. I have sent him to be with your artisans and the artisans of my lord, your father David.
So all the men of Israel were assembled in the king's presence at the festival; this was in the seventh month.[fn]
Therefore, LORD God of Israel,
keep what you promised
to your servant, my father David:
“You will never fail to have a man
to sit before me on the throne of Israel,
if only your sons take care to walk in my Law
as you have walked before me.”
If a man sins against his neighbor
and is forced to take an oath[fn]
and he comes to take an oath
before your altar in this temple,
I will establish your royal throne, as I promised your father David: You will never fail to have a man ruling in Israel.
The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “There is still one man who can inquire of the LORD, but I hate him because he never prophesies good about me, but only disaster. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.”
“The king shouldn't say that,” Jehoshaphat replied.
But a man drew his bow without taking special aim and struck the king of Israel through the joints of his armor. So he said to the charioteer, “Turn around and take me out of the battle,[fn] for I am badly wounded! ”
“For every dispute that comes to you from your brothers who dwell in their cities — whether it regards differences of bloodguilt, law, commandment, statutes, or judgments — you are to warn them, so they will not incur guilt before the LORD and wrath will not come on you and your brothers. Do this, and you will not incur guilt.
Then all the men of Judah and Jerusalem turned back with Jehoshaphat their leader, returning joyfully to Jerusalem, for the LORD enabled them to rejoice over their enemies.
These now are the people of the province who came from those captive exiles King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon[fn] had deported to Babylon. They returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own town.
When the seventh month arrived, and the Israelites were in their towns, the people gathered as one in Jerusalem.
Since the gracious hand of our God was on us, they brought us Sherebiah — a man of insight from the descendants of Mahli, a descendant of Levi son of Israel — along with his sons and brothers, 18 men,
When our enemies heard that we knew their scheme and that God had frustrated it, every one of us returned to his own work on the wall.
Each of the builders had his sword strapped around his waist while he was building, and the one who sounded the ram's horn was beside me.
Then I said to the nobles, the officials, and the rest of the people, “The work is enormous and spread out, and we are separated far from one another along the wall.
And I, my brothers, my servants, and the men of the guard with me never took off our clothes. Each carried his weapon, even when washing.[fn]
After seriously considering the matter, I accused the nobles and officials, saying to them, “Each of you is charging his countrymen interest.” So I called a large assembly against them
Then I put my brother Hanani in charge of Jerusalem, along with Hananiah, commander of the fortress, because he was a faithful man who feared God more than most.
I said to them, “Do not open the gates of Jerusalem until the sun is hot, and let the doors be shut and securely fastened while the guards are on duty. Station the citizens of Jerusalem as guards, some at their posts and some at their homes.”
These are the people of the province who went up among the captive exiles deported by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. Each of them returned to Jerusalem and Judah, to his own town.
all the people gathered together at the square in front of the Water Gate. They asked the scribe Ezra to bring the book of the law of Moses that the LORD had given Israel.
The people went out, brought back branches, and made shelters for themselves on each of their rooftops and courtyards, the court of the house of God, the square by the Water Gate, and the square by the Ephraim Gate.
These are the heads of the province who stayed in Jerusalem (but in the villages of Judah each lived on his own property in their towns — the Israelites, priests, Levites, temple servants, and descendants of Solomon's servants —
I also found out that because the portions for the Levites had not been given, each of the Levites and the singers performing the service had gone back to his own field.
So I purified them from everything foreign and assigned specific duties to each of the priests and Levites.
Do not let a slanderer stay in the land.
Let evil relentlessly[fn] hunt down a violent man.
Whoever shows contempt for his neighbor lacks sense,
but a person with understanding keeps silent.
A gossip goes around revealing a secret,
but a trustworthy person keeps a confidence.
A generous person will be enriched,
and the one who gives a drink of water
will receive water.
A lazy hunter doesn't roast his game,
but to a diligent person, his wealth is precious.
A good man leaves an inheritance to his[fn] grandchildren,
but the sinner's wealth is stored up for the righteous.
The disloyal one will get what his conduct deserves,
and a good one, what his deeds deserve.
A patient person shows great understanding,
but a quick-tempered one promotes foolishness.
Foolishness brings joy to one without sense,
but a person with understanding walks a straight path.
Patience is better than power,
and controlling one's emotions,[fn] than capturing a city.
One with a twisted mind will not succeed,
and one with deceitful speech will fall into ruin.
The one who has knowledge restrains his words,
and one who keeps a cool head[fn]
is a person of understanding.
From the fruit of a person's mouth his stomach is satisfied;
he is filled with the product of his lips.
All the brothers of a poor person hate him;
how much more do his friends
keep their distance from him!
He may pursue them with words,
but they are not there.[fn]
A person with intense anger bears the penalty;
if you rescue him, you'll have to do it again.
Counsel in a person's heart is deep water;
but a person of understanding draws it out.
The person who strays from the way of prudence
will come to rest in the assembly of the departed spirits.
The one who loves pleasure will become poor;
whoever loves wine and oil will not get rich.
A person giving false testimony against his neighbor
is like a club, a sword, or a sharp arrow.
As charcoal for embers and wood for fire,
so is a quarrelsome person for kindling strife.
As a crucible refines silver,
and a smelter refines gold,
so a person should refine his praise.
When a land is in rebellion, it has many rulers,
but with a discerning and knowledgeable person, it endures.
A rich person is wise in his own eyes,
but a poor one who has discernment sees through him.
A faithful person will have many blessings,
but one in a hurry to get rich
will not go unpunished.
A greedy one[fn] is in a hurry for wealth;
he doesn't know that poverty will come to him.
One who becomes stiff-necked,
after many reprimands
will be shattered instantly —
beyond recovery.
By justice a king brings stability to a land,
but a person who demands “contributions”[fn]
demolishes it.
If a wise person goes to court with a fool,
there will be ranting and raving but no resolution.[fn]
An unjust person is detestable to the righteous,
and one whose way is upright
is detestable to the wicked.
She is not afraid for her household when it snows,
for all in her household are doubly clothed.[fn]
Give her the reward of her labor,[fn]
and let her works praise her at the city gates.
All things[fn] are wearisome,
more than anyone can say.
The eye is not satisfied by seeing
or the ear filled with hearing.
God gives a person riches, wealth, and honor so that he lacks nothing of all he desires for himself, but God does not allow him to enjoy them. Instead, a stranger will enjoy them. This is futile and a sickening tragedy.
A man may father a hundred children and live many years. No matter how long he lives,[fn] if he is not satisfied by good things and does not even have a proper burial, I say that a stillborn child is better off than he.
All of them are skilled with swords
and trained in warfare.
Each has his sword at his side
to guard against the terror of the night.
A huge torrent cannot extinguish love;
rivers cannot sweep it away.
If a man were to give all his wealth[fn] for love,
it would be utterly scorned.
Solomon owned a vineyard in Baal-hamon.
He leased the vineyard to tenants.
Each was to bring for his fruit
one thousand pieces of silver.
The craftsman encourages the metalworker;
the one who flattens with the hammer
encourages the one who strikes the anvil,
saying of the soldering, “It is good.”
He fastens it with nails so that it will not fall over.
Let the wicked one abandon his way
and the sinful one his thoughts;
let him return to the LORD,
so he may have compassion on him,
and to our God, for he will freely forgive.
Happy is the person who does this,
the son of man who holds it fast,
who keeps the Sabbath without desecrating it,
and keeps his hand from doing any evil.
I trampled the winepress alone,
and no one from the nations was with me.
I trampled them in my anger
and ground them underfoot in my fury;
their blood spattered my garments,
and all my clothes were stained.
But I am full of the LORD's wrath;
I am tired of holding it back.
Pour it out on the children in the street,
on the gathering of young men as well.
For both husband and wife will be captured,
the old with the very old.[fn]
I know, LORD,
that a person's way of life is not his own;
no one who walks determines his own steps.
They have made it a desolation.
It mourns, desolate, before me.
All the land is desolate,
but no one takes it to heart.
Why are you like a helpless man,
like a warrior unable to save?
Yet you are among us, LORD,
and we bear your name.
Don't leave us!
This is what the LORD says:
Record this man as childless,
a man who will not be successful in his lifetime.
None of his descendants will succeed
in sitting on the throne of David
or ruling again in Judah.
Concerning the prophets:
My heart is broken within me,
and all my bones tremble.
I have become like a drunkard,
like a man overcome by wine,
because of the LORD,
because of his holy words.
“this is what the LORD of Armies, the God of Israel, says: Jonadab son of Rechab will never fail to have a man to stand before me always.' ”
Why should any living person complain,
any man, because of the punishment for his sins?
And I saw six men coming from the direction of the Upper Gate, which faces north, each with a war club in his hand. There was another man among them, clothed in linen, carrying writing equipment. They came and stood beside the bronze altar.
Then the man clothed in linen and carrying writing equipment reported back, “I have done all that you commanded me.”
While the man was standing beside me, I heard someone speaking to me from the temple.
“There is a man in your kingdom who has a spirit of the holy gods in him. In the days of your predecessor he was found to have insight, intelligence, and wisdom like the wisdom of the gods. Your predecessor, King Nebuchadnezzar, appointed him chief of the magicians, mediums, Chaldeans, and diviners. Your own predecessor, the king,
while I was praying, Gabriel, the man I had seen in the first vision, reached me in my extreme weariness, about the time of the evening offering.
“At the beginning of your petitions an answer went out, and I have come to give it, for you are treasured by God.[fn] So consider the message and understand the vision:
I looked up, and there was a man dressed in linen, with a belt of gold from Uphaz[fn] around his waist.
He said to me, “Daniel, you are a man treasured by God.[fn] Understand the words that I'm saying to you. Stand on your feet, for I have now been sent to you.” After he said this to me, I stood trembling.
He said, “Don't be afraid, you who are[fn] treasured by God. Peace to you; be very strong! ”
As he spoke to me, I was strengthened and said, “Let my lord speak, for you have strengthened me.”
Rebuke your mother; rebuke her.
For she is not my wife and I am not her husband.
Let her remove the promiscuous look from her face
and her adultery from between her breasts.
He showed me this: The Lord was standing there by a vertical wall with a plumb line in his hand.
Then the man standing among the myrtle trees explained, “They are the ones the LORD has sent to patrol the earth.”
