“We had dreams,” they said to him, “but there is no one to interpret them.”
Then Joseph said to them, “Don't interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams.”
“You must not follow the statutes of the nations I am driving out before you, for they did all these things, and I abhorred them.
They said, “Does the LORD speak only through Moses? Does he not also speak through us? ” And the LORD heard it.
“If these men die naturally as all people would, and suffer the fate of all, then the LORD has not sent me.
Balak asked Balaam, “Did I not send you an urgent summons? Why didn't you come to me? Am I really not able to reward you? ”
God is not a man, that he might lie,
or a son of man, that he might change his mind.
Does he speak and not act,
or promise and not fulfill?
“No inheritance belonging to the Israelites is to transfer from tribe to tribe, because each of the Israelites is to retain the inheritance of his ancestral tribe.
“‘Let us travel through your land; we will keep strictly to the highway. We will not turn to the right or the left.
“I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today that you will quickly perish from the land you are about to cross the Jordan to possess. You will not live long there, but you will certainly be destroyed.
“He did not make this covenant with our ancestors, but with all of us who are alive here today.
“You are not going to take possession of their land because of your righteousness or your integrity. Instead, the LORD your God will drive out these nations before you because of their wickedness, in order to fulfill the promise he swore to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
“Understand that the LORD your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness, for you are a stiff-necked people.
“Understand today that it is not your children who experienced or saw the discipline of the LORD your God:
His greatness, strong hand, and outstretched arm;
“This is how you are to treat all the cities that are far away from you and are not among the cities of these nations.
“When you lay siege to a city for a long time, fighting against it in order to capture it, do not destroy its trees by putting an ax to them, because you can get food from them. Do not cut them down. Are trees of the field human, to come under siege by you?
“The most sensitive and refined woman among you, who would not venture to set the sole of her foot on the ground because of her refinement and sensitivity, will begrudge the husband she embraces, her son, and her daughter,
“For I know how rebellious and stiff-necked you are. If you are rebelling against the LORD now, while I am still alive, how much more will you rebel after I am dead!
Is this how you repay the LORD,
you foolish and senseless people?
Isn't he your Father and Creator?[fn]
Didn't he make you and sustain you?
“if I had not feared provocation from the enemy,
or feared that these foes might misunderstand
and say, ‘Our own hand has prevailed;
it wasn't the LORD who did all this.' ”
“For they are not meaningless words to you but they are your life, and by them you will live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”
She summoned Barak son of Abinoam from Kedesh in Naphtali and said to him, “Hasn't the LORD, the God of Israel, commanded you, ‘Go, deploy the troops on Mount Tabor, and take with you ten thousand men from the Naphtalites and Zebulunites?
Gideon said to him, “Please, my lord, if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened? And where are all his wonders that our ancestors told us about? They said, ‘Hasn't the LORD brought us out of Egypt? ' But now the LORD has abandoned us and handed us over to Midian.”

“Isn't it true that you can have whatever your god Chemosh conquers for you, and we can have whatever the LORD our God conquers for us?
“Now isn't Boaz our relative? Haven't you been working with his female servants? This evening he will be winnowing barley on the threshing floor.
“Why harden your hearts as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened theirs? When he afflicted them, didn't they send Israel away, and Israel left?
Saul responded, “Am I not a Benjaminite from the smallest of Israel's tribes and isn't my clan the least important of all the clans of the Benjaminite tribe? So why have you said something like this to me? ”
Samuel took the flask of oil, poured it out on Saul's head, kissed him, and said, “Hasn't the LORD anointed you ruler over his inheritance?[fn]
“Isn't the wheat harvest today? I will call on the LORD, and he will send thunder and rain so that you will recognize what an immense evil you committed in the LORD's sight by requesting a king for yourselves.”
Samuel continued, “Although you once considered yourself unimportant, haven't you become the leader of the tribes of Israel? The LORD anointed you king over Israel
“Your servant has killed lions and bears; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, for he has defied the armies of the living God.”
Saul's servants reported these words directly to David, but he replied, “Is it trivial in your sight to become the king's son-in-law? I am a poor commoner.”
But Achish's servants said to him, “Isn't this David, the king of the land? Don't they sing about him during their dances:
Saul has killed his thousands,
but David his tens of thousands? ”
The Philistine commanders, however, were enraged with Achish and told him, “Send that man back and let him return to the place you assigned him. He must not go down with us into battle only to become our adversary during the battle. What better way could he ingratiate himself with his master than with the heads of our men?
the Ammonite leaders said to Hanun their lord, “Just because David has sent men with condolences for you, do you really believe he's showing respect for your father? Instead, hasn't David sent his emissaries in order to scout out the city, spy on it, and demolish it? ”
So David sent someone to inquire about her, and he said, “Isn't this Bathsheba, daughter of Eliam and wife of Uriah the Hethite? ”[fn]
When it was reported to David, “Uriah didn't go home,” David questioned Uriah, “Haven't you just come from a journey? Why didn't you go home? ”

“And tell Amasa, ‘Aren't you my flesh and blood?[fn] May God punish me and do so severely if you don't become commander of my army from now on instead of Joab! ' ”
“Go, approach King David and say to him, ‘My lord the king, did you not swear to your servant: Your son Solomon is to become king after me, and he is the one who is to sit on my throne? So why has Adonijah become king? '
So the king summoned Shimei and said to him, “Didn't I make you swear by the LORD and warn you, saying, ‘On the day you leave and go anywhere else, know for sure that you will certainly die'? And you said to me, ‘The sentence is fair; I will obey.'
“Aren't Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Couldn't I wash in them and be clean? ” So he turned and left in a rage.
But his servants approached and said to him, “My father, if the prophet had told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more should you do it when he only tells you, ‘Wash and be clean'? ”
“And my heart didn't go[fn] when the man got down from his chariot to meet you,” Elisha said. “Is this a time to accept silver and clothing, olive orchards and vineyards, flocks and herds, and male and female slaves?
Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. The king sent a man ahead of him, but before the messenger got to him, Elisha said to the elders, “Do you see how this murderer has sent someone to remove my head? Look, when the messenger comes, shut the door to keep him out. Isn't the sound of his master's feet behind him? ”

“The LORD your God is with you, isn't he? And hasn't he given you rest on every side? For he has handed the land's inhabitants over to me, and the land has been subdued before the LORD and his people.

“Didn't your ancestors do the same, so that our God brought all this disaster on us and on this city? And now you are rekindling his anger against Israel by profaning the Sabbath! ”
Isn't each person consigned to forced labor on earth?
Are not his days like those of a hired worker?
Do you really take notice of one like this?
Will you bring me into judgment against you?[fn]
Isn't God as high as the heavens?
And look at the highest stars — how lofty they are!
Will evildoers never understand?
They consume my people as they consume bread;
they do not call on the LORD.
“Something awful has overwhelmed him,[fn]
and he won't rise again from where he lies! ”
Will evildoers never understand?

Yet he was compassionate;
he atoned for their iniquity
and did not destroy them.
He often turned his anger aside
and did not unleash[fn] all his wrath.
The one who instructs nations,
the one who teaches mankind knowledge —
does he not discipline?
But the royal spokesman replied, “Has my master sent me to speak these words to your master and to you, and not to the men who are sitting on the wall, who are destined with you to eat their own excrement and drink their own urine? ”
Who gave Jacob to the robber,[fn]
and Israel to the plunderers?
Was it not the LORD?
Have we not sinned against him?
They were not willing to walk in his ways,
and they would not listen to his instruction.
“Isn't this the fast I choose:
To break the chains of wickedness,
to untie the ropes of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free,
and to tear off every yoke?
Have you not brought this on yourself
by abandoning the LORD your God
while he was leading you along the way?
Look to the barren heights and see.
Where have you not been immoral?
You sat waiting for them beside the highways
like a nomad in the desert.
You have defiled the land
with your prostitution and wickedness.
“But are they really provoking me? ” This is the LORD's declaration. “Isn't it they themselves being provoked to disgrace? ”
I know, LORD,
that a person's way of life is not his own;
no one who walks determines his own steps.
Can any of the worthless idols of the nations bring rain?
Or can the skies alone give showers?
Are you not the LORD our God?
We therefore put our hope in you,
for you have done all these things.
The next day, when Pashhur released Jeremiah from the stocks, Jeremiah said to him, “The LORD does not call you Pashhur, but Terror Is on Every Side,[fn]
“Am I a God who is only near” — this is the LORD's declaration — “and not a God who is far away?
“Can a person hide in secret places where I cannot see him? ” — the LORD's declaration. “Do I not fill the heavens and the earth? ” — the LORD's declaration.
“Is not my word like fire” — this is the LORD's declaration — “and like a hammer that pulverizes rock?
“Did King Hezekiah of Judah and all the people of Judah put him to death? Did not the king fear the LORD and plead for the LORD's favor,[fn] and did not the LORD relent concerning the disaster he had pronounced against them? We are about to bring a terrible disaster on ourselves! ”
Jeremiah replied to Zedekiah, “If I tell you, you will kill me, won't you? Besides, if I give you advice, you won't listen to me anyway.”
“As for the incense you burned in Judah's cities and in Jerusalem's streets — you, your ancestors, your kings, your officials, and the people of the land — did the LORD not remember them? He brought this to mind.
“They are saying, ‘Isn't the time near to build houses?[fn] The city is the pot, and we are the meat.'
“You are to say, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says: Will it flourish? Will he not tear out its roots and strip off its fruit so that it shrivels? All its fresh leaves will wither! Great strength and many people will not be needed to pull it from its roots.
“But you say, ‘The Lord's way isn't fair.' Now listen, house of Israel: Is it my way that is unfair? Instead, isn't it your ways that are unfair?
“But the house of Israel says, ‘The Lord's way isn't fair.' Is it my ways that are unfair, house of Israel? Instead, isn't it your ways that are unfair?
Then I said, “Oh, Lord GOD, they are saying of me, ‘Isn't he just composing parables? ' ”
“As for you, son of man, know that on that day I will take from them their stronghold — their pride and joy, the delight of their eyes, and the longing of their hearts — as well as their sons and daughters.
Then King Nebuchadnezzar jumped up in alarm. He said to his advisers, “Didn't we throw three men, bound, into the fire? ”
“Yes, of course, Your Majesty,” they replied to the king.
Won't the day of the LORD
be darkness rather than light,
even gloom without any brightness in it?
All this will happen because of Jacob's rebellion
and the sins of the house of Israel.
What is the rebellion of Jacob?
Isn't it Samaria?
And what is the high place of Judah?
Isn't it Jerusalem?
Her leaders issue rulings for a bribe,
her priests teach for payment,
and her prophets practice divination for silver.
Yet they lean on the LORD, saying,
“Isn't the LORD among us?
No disaster will overtake us.”
Are you not from eternity, LORD my God?
My Holy One, you[fn] will not die.
LORD, you appointed them to execute judgment;
my Rock, you destined them to punish us.
Won't all of these take up a taunt against him,
with mockery and riddles about him?
They will say,
“Woe to him who amasses what is not his —
how much longer? —
and loads himself with goods taken in pledge.”
