God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” There was an evening, and there was a morning: one day.
God called the dry land “earth,” and the gathering of the water he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good.
The LORD God formed out of the ground every wild animal and every bird of the sky, and brought each to the man to see what he would call it. And whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name.
The man gave names to all the livestock, to the birds of the sky, and to every wild animal; but for the man[fn] no helper was found corresponding to him.
So Hagar gave birth to Abram's son, and Abram named his son (whom Hagar bore) Ishmael.
“Hurry up! Run to it, for I cannot do anything until you get there.” Therefore the name of the city is Zoar.[fn]
The firstborn gave birth to a son and named him Moab.[fn] He is the father of the Moabites of today.
The younger also gave birth to a son, and she named him Ben-ammi.[fn] He is the father of the Ammonites of today.
Early in the morning Abimelech got up, called all his servants together, and personally[fn] told them all these things, and the men were terrified.
Then Abimelech called Abraham in and said to him, “What have you done to us? How did I sin against you that you have brought such enormous guilt on me and on my kingdom? You have done things to me that should never be done.”
God heard the boy crying, and the[fn] angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, “What's wrong, Hagar? Don't be afraid, for God has heard the boy crying from the place where he is.
But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham! ”
He replied, “Here I am.”
After this, his brother came out grasping Esau's heel with his hand. So he was named Jacob.[fn] Isaac was sixty years old when they were born.
Abimelech sent for Isaac and said, “So she is really your wife! How could you say, ‘She is my sister'? ”
Isaac answered him, “Because I thought I might die on account of her.”
But the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac's herdsmen and said, “The water is ours! ” So he named the well Esek[fn] because they argued with him.
When Isaac was old and his eyes were so weak that he could not see, he called his older son Esau and said to him, “My son.”
And he answered, “Here I am.”
When the words of her older son Esau were reported to Rebekah, she summoned her younger son Jacob and said to him, “Listen, your brother Esau is consoling himself by planning to kill you.
Leah conceived, gave birth to a son, and named him Reuben,[fn] for she said, “The LORD has seen my affliction; surely my husband will love me now.”
She conceived again, gave birth to a son, and said, “The LORD heard that I am neglected and has given me this son also.” So she named him Simeon.[fn]
She conceived again, gave birth to a son, and said, “At last, my husband will become attached to me because I have borne three sons for him.” Therefore he was named Levi.[fn]
And she conceived again, gave birth to a son, and said, “This time I will praise the LORD.” Therefore she named him Judah.[fn] Then Leah stopped having children.
Rachel said, “God has vindicated me; yes, he has heard me and given me a son,” so she named him Dan.[fn]
Leah said, “God has rewarded me for giving my slave to my husband,” and she named him Issachar.[fn]
“God has given me a good gift,” Leah said. “This time my husband will honor me because I have borne six sons for him,” and she named him Zebulun.[fn]
Then Jacob offered a sacrifice on the mountain and invited his relatives to eat a meal. So they ate a meal and spent the night on the mountain.
When he saw them, Jacob said, “This is God's camp.” So he called that place Mahanaim.[fn]
Jacob then named the place Peniel,[fn] “For I have seen God face to face,” he said, “yet my life has been spared.”
but Jacob went to Succoth. He built a house for himself and shelters for his livestock; that is why the place was called Succoth.[fn]
Jacob built an altar there and called the place El-bethel[fn] because it was there that God had revealed himself to him when he was fleeing from his brother.
But then he pulled his hand back, out came his brother, and she said, “What a breakout you have made for yourself! ” So he was named Perez.[fn]
Then his brother, who had the scarlet thread tied to his hand, came out, and was named Zerah.[fn]
she called her household servants. “Look,” she said to them, “my husband brought a Hebrew man to make fools of us. He came to me so he could sleep with me, and I screamed as loud as I could.
When morning came, he was troubled, so he summoned all the magicians of Egypt and all its wise men. Pharaoh told them his dreams, but no one could interpret them for him.
Then Pharaoh sent for Joseph, and they quickly brought him from the dungeon.[fn] He shaved, changed his clothes, and went to Pharaoh.
Joseph named the firstborn Manasseh[fn] and said, “God has made me forget all my hardship and my whole family.”
And the second son he named Ephraim[fn] and said, “God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.”
When the time approached for him to die, he called his son Joseph and said to him, “If I have found favor with you, put your hand under my thigh and promise me that you will deal with me in kindness and faithfulness. Do not bury me in Egypt.
Then Jacob called his sons and said, “Gather around, and I will tell you what will happen to you in the days to come.[fn]
When the Canaanite inhabitants of the land saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “This is a solemn mourning on the part of the Egyptians.” Therefore the place is named Abel-mizraim.[fn] It is across the Jordan.
So the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and asked them, “Why have you done this and let the boys live? ”
When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look, God called out to him from the bush, “Moses, Moses! ”
“Here I am,” he answered.
Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “Appeal to the LORD to remove the frogs from me and my people. Then I will let the people go and they can sacrifice to the LORD.”
Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “Go sacrifice to your God within the country.”
Pharaoh sent for Moses and Aaron. “I have sinned this time,” he said to them. “The LORD is the righteous one, and I and my people are the guilty ones.
Pharaoh summoned Moses and said, “Go, worship the LORD. Even your families may go with you; only your flocks and herds must stay behind.”
Then Moses summoned all the elders of Israel and said to them, “Go, select an animal from the flock according to your families, and slaughter the Passover animal.
He summoned Moses and Aaron during the night and said, “Get out immediately from among my people, both you and the Israelites, and go, worship the LORD as you have said.
Moses went up the mountain to God, and the LORD called to him from the mountain: “This is what you must say to the house of Jacob and explain to the Israelites:
After Moses came back, he summoned the elders of the people and set before them all these words that the LORD had commanded him.
The LORD came down on Mount Sinai at the top of the mountain. Then the LORD summoned Moses to the top of the mountain, and he went up.
The glory of the LORD settled on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days. On the seventh day he called to Moses from the cloud.
The LORD came down in a cloud, stood with him there, and proclaimed his name, “the LORD.”
The LORD passed in front of him and proclaimed:
The LORD — the LORD is a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger and abounding in faithful love and truth,
But Moses called out to them, so Aaron and all the leaders of the community returned to him, and Moses spoke to them.
So Moses summoned Bezalel, Oholiab, and every skilled person in whose heart the LORD had placed wisdom, all whose hearts moved them, to come to the work and do it.
Moses summoned Mishael and Elzaphan, sons of Aaron's uncle Uzziel, and said to them, “Come here and carry your relatives away from the front of the sanctuary to a place outside the camp.”

Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, “You have seen with your own eyes everything the LORD did in Egypt to Pharaoh, to all his officials, and to his entire land.
Moses then summoned Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you will go with[fn] this people into the land the LORD swore to give to their ancestors. You will enable them to take possession of it.
The LORD then said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the disgrace of Egypt from you.” Therefore, that place is still called Gilgal[fn] today.
“Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, set out to fight against Israel. He sent for Balaam son of Beor to curse you,
Then the man went to the land of the Hittites, built a town, and named it Luz. That is its name still today.
She summoned Barak son of Abinoam from Kedesh in Naphtali and said to him, “Hasn't the LORD, the God of Israel, commanded you, ‘Go, deploy the troops on Mount Tabor, and take with you ten thousand men from the Naphtalites and Zebulunites?
Sisera summoned all his nine hundred iron chariots and all the troops who were with him from Harosheth of the Nations to the Wadi Kishon.
So Gideon built an altar to the LORD there and called it The LORD Is Peace.[fn] It is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites today.
That day Gideon was called Jerubbaal, since Joash said, “Let Baal contend with him,” because he tore down his altar.
When they told Jotham, he climbed to the top of Mount Gerizim, raised his voice, and called to them:
Listen to me, citizens of Shechem,
and may God listen to you:
So the woman gave birth to a son and named him Samson. The boy grew, and the LORD blessed him.
When he finished speaking, he threw away the jawbone and named that place Jawbone Hill.[fn]
When Delilah realized that he had told her the whole truth, she sent this message to the Philistine leaders: “Come one more time, for he has told me the whole truth.” The Philistine leaders came to her and brought the silver with them.
Then she let him fall asleep on her lap and called a man to shave off the seven braids on his head. In this way, she made him helpless, and his strength left him.
Once again the LORD called, “Samuel! ”
Samuel got up, went to Eli, and said, “Here I am; you called me.”
“I didn't call, my son,” he replied. “Go back and lie down.”
The LORD came, stood there, and called as before, “Samuel, Samuel! ”
Samuel responded, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”
She named the boy Ichabod,[fn] saying, “The glory has departed from Israel,” referring to the capture of the ark of God and to the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband.
Afterward, Samuel took a stone and set it upright between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer,[fn] explaining, “The LORD has helped us to this point.”
They got up early, and just before dawn, Samuel called to Saul on the roof, “Get up, and I'll send you on your way! ” Saul got up, and both he and Samuel went outside.
“In peace,” he replied. “I've come to sacrifice to the LORD. Consecrate yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.”[fn] Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
Jesse called Abinadab and presented him to Samuel. “The LORD hasn't chosen this one either,” Samuel said.
So Jonathan summoned David and told him all these words. Then Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he served him as he did before.
Then David summoned one of his servants and said, “Come here and kill him! ” The servant struck him, and he died.
Then Abner called out to Joab, “Must the sword devour forever? Don't you realize this will only end in bitterness? How long before you tell the troops to stop pursuing their brothers? ”
Then the king summoned Saul's attendant Ziba and said to him, “I have given to your master's grandson all that belonged to Saul and his family.
Then David invited Uriah to eat and drink with him, and David got him drunk. He went out in the evening to lie down on his cot with his master's servants, but he did not go home.
Instead, he called to the servant who waited on him, “Get this away from me, throw her out, and bolt the door behind her! ”
Two years later, Absalom's sheepshearers were at Baal-hazor near Ephraim, and Absalom invited all the king's sons.
Joab went to the king and told him. So David summoned Absalom, who came to the king and paid homage with his face to the ground before him. Then the king kissed Absalom.
While he was offering the sacrifices, Absalom sent for David's adviser Ahithophel the Gilonite, from his city of Giloh. So the conspiracy grew strong, and the people supporting Absalom continued to increase.
When he was alive, Absalom had taken a pillar and raised it up for himself in the King's Valley, since he thought, “I have no son to preserve the memory of my name.” So he named the pillar after himself. It is still called Absalom's Monument today.
The Gibeonites were not Israelites but rather a remnant of the Amorites. The Israelites had taken an oath concerning them, but Saul had tried to kill them in his zeal for the Israelites and Judah. So David summoned the Gibeonites and spoke to them.
Adonijah sacrificed sheep, goats, cattle, and fattened cattle near the stone of Zoheleth, which is next to En-rogel. He invited all his royal brothers and all the men of Judah, the servants of the king,
but he did not invite the prophet Nathan, Benaiah, the royal guard, or his brother Solomon.
“He has lavishly sacrificed oxen, fattened cattle, and sheep. He invited all the king's sons, the priest Abiathar, and Joab the commander of the army, but he did not invite your servant Solomon.
“For today he went down and lavishly sacrificed oxen, fattened cattle, and sheep. He invited all the sons of the king, the commanders of the army, and the priest Abiathar. And look! They're eating and drinking in his presence, and they're saying, ‘Long live King Adonijah! '
“But he did not invite me — me, your servant — or the priest Zadok or Benaiah son of Jehoiada or your servant Solomon.
Then the king summoned Shimei and said to him, “Build a house for yourself in Jerusalem and live there, but don't leave there and go anywhere else.
So the king summoned Shimei and said to him, “Didn't I make you swear by the LORD and warn you, saying, ‘On the day you leave and go anywhere else, know for sure that you will certainly die'? And you said to me, ‘The sentence is fair; I will obey.'
So he said, “What are these towns you've given me, my brother? ” So he called them the Land of Cabul,[fn] as they are still called today.
Ahab called for Obadiah, who was in charge of the palace. Obadiah was a man who greatly feared the LORD
Then the king of Israel called for all the elders of the land and said, “Recognize[fn] that this one is only looking for trouble, for he demanded my wives, my children, my silver, and my gold, and I didn't turn him down.”
So the king of Israel called an officer and said, “Hurry and get Micaiah son of Imlah! ”
He ordered his attendant Gehazi, “Call this Shunammite woman.” So he called her and she stood before him.
She summoned her husband and said, “Please send me one of the servants and one of the donkeys, so I can hurry to the man of God and come back again.”
Elisha called Gehazi and said, “Call the Shunammite woman.” He called her and she came. Then Elisha said, “Pick up your son.”
The king of Aram was enraged because of this matter, and he called his servants and demanded of them, “Tell me, which one of us is for the king of Israel? ”
The prophet Elisha called one of the sons of the prophets and said, “Tuck your mantle under your belt, take this flask of oil with you, and go to Ramoth-gilead.
So King Joash called the priest Jehoiada and the other priests and asked, “Why haven't you repaired the temple's damage? Since you haven't, don't take any silver from your assessors; instead, hand it over for the repair of the temple.”
Amaziah killed ten thousand Edomites in Salt Valley. He took Sela in battle and called it Joktheel, which is still its name today.
He removed the high places, shattered the sacred pillars, and cut down the Asherah poles. He broke into pieces the bronze snake that Moses made, for until then the Israelites were burning incense to it. It was called Nehushtan.[fn]
Jabez[fn] was more honored than his brothers. His mother named him Jabez and said, “I gave birth to him in pain.”
They assigned by lot the towns named above from the tribes of the descendants of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin.
Machir's wife Maacah gave birth to a son, and she named him Peresh. His brother was named Sheresh, and his sons were Ulam and Rekem.
He slept with his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to a son. So he named him Beriah, because there had been misfortune in his home.[fn]
Then David took up residence in the stronghold; therefore, it was called the city of David.
David was angry because of the LORD's outburst against Uzzah, so he named that place Outburst Against Uzzah,[fn] as it is still named today.
So the Israelites went up to Baal-perazim, and David defeated the Philistines there. Then David said, “Like a bursting flood, God has used me to burst out against my enemies.” Therefore, they named that place The Lord Bursts Out.[fn]
David summoned the priests Zadok and Abiathar and the Levites Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel, and Amminadab.
Then he summoned his son Solomon and charged him to build a house for the LORD God of Israel.
So the king of Israel called an officer and said, “Hurry and get Micaiah son of Imlah! ”
So the king called Jehoiada the high priest and said, “Why haven't you required the Levites to bring from Judah and Jerusalem the tax imposed by the LORD's servant Moses and the assembly of Israel for the tent of the testimony?
Yet Haman controlled himself and went home. He sent for his friends and his wife Zeresh to join him.
He named his first daughter Jemimah, his second Keziah, and his third Keren-happuch.
The Mighty One, God,[fn] the LORD, speaks;
he summons the earth
from the rising of the sun to its setting.
On that day the Lord GOD of Armies
called for weeping, for wailing, for shaven heads,
and for the wearing of sackcloth.
“Who has performed and done this,
calling the generations from the beginning?
I am the LORD, the first
and with the last — I am he.”
Coasts and islands,[fn] listen to me;
distant peoples, pay attention.
The LORD called me before I was born.
He named me while I was in my mother's womb.
“The LORD named you
a flourishing olive tree,
beautiful with well-formed fruit.
He has set fire to it,
and its branches are consumed[fn]
with the sound of a mighty tumult.
The next day, when Pashhur released Jeremiah from the stocks, Jeremiah said to him, “The LORD does not call you Pashhur, but Terror Is on Every Side,[fn]
So Jeremiah summoned Baruch son of Neriah. At Jeremiah's dictation,[fn] Baruch wrote on a scroll all the words the LORD had spoken to Jeremiah.
King Zedekiah later sent for him and received him, and in his house privately asked him, “Is there a word from the LORD? ”
“There is,” Jeremiah responded. He continued, “You will be handed over to the king of Babylon.”
King Zedekiah sent for the prophet Jeremiah and received him at the third entrance of the LORD's temple. The king said to Jeremiah, “I am going to ask you something; don't hide anything from me.”
and he summoned Johanan son of Kareah, all the commanders of the armies who were with him, and all the people from the least to the greatest.
The Lord has rejected
all the mighty men within me.
He has summoned an army[fn] against me
to crush my young warriors.
The Lord has trampled Virgin Daughter Judah
like grapes in a winepress.
Then the glory of the God of Israel rose from above the cherub where it had been, to the threshold of the temple. He called to the man clothed in linen and carrying writing equipment.
I heard a human voice calling from the middle of the Ulai: “Gabriel, explain the vision to this man.”
