Balaam proclaimed his poem:

“Now, Israel, listen to the statutes and ordinances I am teaching you to follow, so that you may live, enter, and take possession of the land the LORD, the God of your ancestors, is giving you.

Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, “Israel, listen to the statutes and ordinances I am proclaiming as you hear them today. Learn and follow them carefully.

I am about to bring disaster on these people,

the fruit of their own plotting,

for they have paid no attention to my words.

They have rejected my instruction.

“You are to say, ‘Hear the word of the LORD, king of Judah, you who sit on the throne of David ​— ​you, your officers, and your people who enter these gates.

Earth, earth, earth,

hear the word of the LORD!

“And you, son of man, listen to what I tell you: Do not be rebellious like that rebellious house. Open your mouth and eat what I am giving you.”

Next he said to me, “Son of man, listen carefully to all my words that I speak to you and take them to heart.

“ ‘Therefore, you prostitute, hear the word of the LORD!

“and say to the forest there, ‘Hear the word of the LORD! This is what the Lord GOD says: I am about to ignite a fire in you, and it will devour every green tree and every dry tree in you. Do not prophesy against Israel;

do not preach against the house of Isaac.

The voice of the LORD calls out to the city[fn]

(and it is wise to fear your name):

“Pay attention to the rod

and the one who ordained it.[fn]

“Listen, High Priest Joshua, you and your colleagues sitting before you; indeed, these men are a sign that I am about to bring my servant, the Branch.
