McKinney attended Louisiana College and the Southwestern Baptist Seminary in Ft. Worth, Texas, where he taught 1919-1932. He also served as music editor at the Robert H. Coleman company in Dallas, Texas (1918-1935), and pastored in Fort Worth, Texas (1931-1935). In 1935, he became music editor for the Baptist Sunday School Board in Nashville, Tennessee. McKinney wrote words and music for about 150 hymns, and music for 115 more.
