There has been much discussion as to how the Holy Spirit will work during the three and one half year period of tribulation that will occur in the future. Will He be absent? Will He work in the same way as today?

The Bible indicates that the Holy Spirit will be active during this period, and as a result multitudes will be converted. The Scripture mentions three specific groups: the 144,000, a great multitude, and Jews who have passed through God's judgment.

The 144,000

At the beginning of this period, the 144,000 Jews will be converted and sealed, or protected, by the Holy Spirit.

And I heard the number of those who were sealed. One hundred and forty-four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel were sealed . . . These were redeemed among men, being firstfruits of God and to the Lamb (Revelation 7:4,14:4).

After they are saved, they become witnesses of Jesus Christ to the remainder of humanity.

Great Multitude

The Bible testifies that an innumerable multitude will be converted out of the Great Tribulation:

After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all the nations, tribes, people, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, saying, Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb (Revelation 7:9,10).

Jewish Believers

The Holy Spirit will be at work through a third group of people who are converted. These are Jewish believers who have survived the judgment of the great tribulation:

And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they have pierced; they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieves for a firstborn (Zechariah 12:10).

The work of the Holy Spirit will not cease during this period. On the contrary, many unbelievers will come to know Jesus Christ through the Spirit's work.
