Don Stewart :: Why Should a Person Read and Study the Bible?

Don Stewart
The Bible is God's communication to humanity. It informs us who we are, who He is, and what He expects from us. Consequently there are many reasons why the believer should read the Bible.

Know God

One of the reasons we read the Bible is to gather knowledge about God. We need to know who He is, and what He wants from us. The main way we can achieve this is by reading the Bible.

Develop Spiritual Mentality

Another reason we should read the Bible is to gain a proper spiritual mentality. The unbelieving world around us does not emphasize the fact that there is a spiritual battle going on.

The Apostle Paul emphasized that the battle we are fighting is spiritual.

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual wickedness in the heavenly places (Ephesians 6:12).

Growth

We grow by learning the Word of God.

As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby (1 Peter 2:2).

For spiritual growth we should read and study the Bible.

We Can Be Changed

Reading the Bible can change our behavior.

But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord (2 Corinthians 3:18).

Cleansed

The Scripture also has a cleansing affect on those who read it:

How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your Word (Psalm 119:9).

Commanded To Study

Reading the Bible is one thing, studying it is another. The more we study God's Word and understand what His character is like the more we trust Him. We are commanded to give diligence to God and His Word.

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved by Him, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly explaining the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15).

Summary

We conclude that Bible reading is essential to spiritual growth. It informs us of who God is and what He wants for us. It is the avenue by which we can be changed and grow spiritually. Consequently Bible reading is very important for spiritual growth.
