The Bible speaks of not only the genuine Spirit of God but also of a counterfeit. Paul warned the church at Corinth:

But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. For if he who comes preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or if you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted, you may well put up with it . . . For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:3,4,13,14).

Test The Spirits

We are warned about a counterfeit Holy Spirit. A thing that is counterfeit always is made to look as close as possible to the genuine article. This lets us know that everything that claims to proceed from the Holy Spirit is not necessarily from the Holy Spirit. We must test the spirits.

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets are gone out into the world (1 John 4:1).
