Don Stewart :: How Involved Is God in Running the Universe?

Don Stewart

Though the Bible teaches that God created the universe some people question His involvement with it. There are those who claim that He is not involved with the orderly running of things. But the Bible speaks to the contrary. God supports and controls the universe He created.

The Forces Of Nature Are In His Control

The forces of nature are in the control of the Lord.

Thus says the Lord, who gives the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and the stars for a light by night, who disturbs the sea, and its waves roar (the Lord of hosts is his name) (Jeremiah 31:35).

If for one moment God stopped controlling and supporting the universe it would disintegrate. The Bible teaches that everything is dependent upon Him whether it be the change of seasons, the growth of plant and animal life, or the movement of the earth and stars.

He Sustains All Life

The God of the Bible sustains all life. The Apostle Paul said.

The God who made the world and everything in it, he who is Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in shrines made by human hands, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mortals life and breath and all things (Acts 17:25,38).

God Holds Our Very Breath

The prophet Daniel told the pagan King Belshazzar that God holds our very breath in His hand.

You have praised the gods of silver and gold, bronze and iron, wood and stone, which do not see or hear or know; and the God who holds your breath in His hand and owns all your ways, you have not glorified (Daniel 5:23).

Summary

God is actively involved in the running of the universe. The forces of nature are under the Lord's control. He does with them what he pleases. Moreover God sustains all life. In fact, the Bible says that God holds our very breath in his hand. Consequently the Bible does not portray a God who is aloof from his creation.
