2 Kings 21:1–26 Manasseh and Amon. Even through the bad times, the Lord has been faithful to Judah because of his promise to David. Throughout chs. 16–20 it is suggested that Judah will eventually go into exile, just like Israel. As the wicked Manasseh begins his reign, these hints of disaster become prophetic announcements of judgment.
2 Kings 21:1–9 Manasseh is the very worst of the Judean kings. He participates in everything that has been corrupted in the religion of Israel and adds to it despicable practices of the nations.
2 Kings 21:8 For the feet of Israel to wander . . . out of the land would be for the people to go into exile. The authors make it clear that Judah will go into exile because of its own unfaithfulness rather than because of any weakness on God’s part.
2 Kings 21:12 ears . . . will tingle. People will react when they hear of the disaster that happens to Jerusalem and Judah (compare Deut. 2:25; Isa. 32:11).
2 Kings 21:13 the measuring line . . . the plumb line. The city will be assessed by the divine architect (compare the use of the measuring line in Isa. 34:11; Lam. 2:8) and will be condemned.
2 Kings 21:17–18 Manasseh’s burial site was outside the part of Jerusalem where previous kings were buried. The garden of Uzza was perhaps an enclosure on the Temple Mount dedicated to the Arabian goddess al-Uzza, identified with Venus. It could also have been an enclosure at the southern end of the Kidron Valley, just outside the city walls, where there was a “king’s garden” (25:4; Neh. 3:15).
