God Reigns Forever

But of the Son he says, "Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom."

Reflection

Drawing from Psalm 45:6–7, Jesus is declared as the divine, righteous king who rules and reigns forever and ever. He is the heir, creator, and sustainer of all things, whose redemptive work on the cross provided the only means of forgiveness that is sufficient to satisfy God's righteous requirement (Heb 1:2–3). Oh the joy of knowing that all of the promises of God to you are found in Christ and kept by Christ, who rules and reigns forever! He is the bedrock of your hope.

Unchanging Word of God

The law of Yahweh is perfect, restoring the soul;
The testimony of Yahweh is sure, making wise the simple.

Reflection

The revelation of God to us, His testimony, is sure. It is dependable. It is reliable. It is a rock beneath our feet that will hold sway in the fiercest of storms. God will never change His mind about the Scriptures, nor will He ever revoke a single word from His testimony. It is sure because He said it. He cannot lie (Titus 1:2; Heb 6:18). God's Word is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls (Heb 6:19). In a world where so many changes happen, where we face doubts about tomorrow, where we are uncertain about so many things, what a blessing to have the solid testimony of Yahweh to rest upon! Praise God that our salvation is sure because of Him!

Always Loved By God

"As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you.
Abide in my love."

Reflection

Charles Spurgeon once said, "Beloved, you do not, dare not, could not, doubt the love of the Father to his Son. It is one of those unquestionable truths about which you never dreamed of holding an argument." The love of the Father toward the Son is beyond comprehension and cannot fully be understood or contained. Spurgeon continues, "Our Lord would have us place his love to us in the same category with the Father's love to himself. We are to be as confident of the one as of the other. What a wonderful certainty is conveyed to us by this token!"

Forgiven By God

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
John 1:9 (KJV)

Reflection

The Father is faithful, always faithful. He has always done what He has said He would do. How many prophecies about the first coming of the Son have gone unfulfilled? None. He first covered sin with the sacrifices of the Law of Moses. Yet this was but a foreshadow of the good things to come. Through the death of His Son, He has blotted out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us. Even more, He has since, the beginning, declared that He would cleanse us from all our iniquity. He promises to make us clean—we have been washed with the washing of water by the Word, sanctified, and justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and the Spirit of God (1Co 6:11, Eph 5:26).

Accounted Righteous

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "BUT THE RIGHTEOUS WILL LIVE BY FAITH."
Romans 1:16-17 (LSB)

Reflection

This is the core thesis of Paul's letter to the Romans. He boldly declares that he is unashamed to proclaim the gospel—the good news that Jesus lived a perfect life on our behalf, paid for our sins on the cross, and rose from the grave. Paul is not ashamed because he knows that the good news of Jesus Christ has the power to transform sinners. God's righteousness is revealed to us in the gospel. This is the righteousness that is given to us—those that put their trust in Jesus Christ. The great exchange: Christ took our sin, and we get His righteousness accounted to us. How amazing is God!

God's Masterpiece

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Ephesians 2:10 (ESV)

Reflection

As one of nearly 8 billion people alive on this planet, it can be easy to lose sight of the personal affection expressed in this verse. God has called you His workmanship—some translations even go so far as to translate this word as His "masterpiece". The promise here is not just that you are God's masterpiece, that is a simple statement of reality. The promise is even greater—God has created you uniquely and beautifully for good works He prepared beforehand; to be a beacon of hope proclaiming the Good News of salvation to a broken and dying world. You aren't one insignificant human life amidst billions, but rather an ambassador of God, lovingly created and entrusted with sharing the greatest news history will ever know.

Sufficient Grace

And He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness." Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Reflection

God's kingdom is often described as an 'upside down' kingdom. With words like "My strength is made perfect in weakness". We call sayings such as these a 'Christian paradox' because they seem contrary to our natural way of thinking. How can strength be weakness? If we paralleled our strength to our pride, we can possibly see that just like pride, our strength, our wealth, our wisdom, or even our health can become stumbling stones in our lives in that they get in the way of the Holy Spirit at work in us and through us. Putting ourselves aside, we then make room for God's grace and God's grace is most powerful.

A New Heart

"I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh."

Reflection

Our great God has made a new covenant with us! We look back to the Old Testament and ceremonial washings with water to remove defilement as an imperfect way to cover sin. Let's rejoice because a true cleansing of sin is made possible by the finished work of our Savior, Jesus Christ, on the cross. Not only are we cleansed but we are spiritually transformed! Our old, dead heart of stone has been replaced with a new heart of flesh! One that by the work of the indwelling Holy Spirit can feel a deep love for God and others. This is praise-worthy!

Child of God

For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father."

Reflection

Despite our own fears, insecurities, and shortcomings, and in spite of whatever names and labels the world gives—if you are led by the Spirit of God in salvation through faith in Christ – God calls you His own child! This passage leaves no room for doubt whatsoever, assuring us that "The Spirit Himself", the Holy Spirit, whom Jesus calls the Spirit of Truth, "bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God" (Rom 8:16). If the Bible testifies that we are children of God, and the Holy Spirit bears witness to this promise, is there any room for doubt? So come boldly to the throne of grace knowing that your Father in Heaven loves you as His own child.

Permanently Restored

As far as the east is from the west,

Reflection

And how far is the east from the west? Going in one of those directions will never intersect with the other. The farther a person travels east, the farther away from the west one becomes. In other words, there is no reunion with a believer's sins or their eternal costs, once Christ's blood has been applied to them. He makes His bride fully and permanently acceptable to the Holy God.

Always With Us

"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you."
Deuteronomy 31:6 (NIV)

Reflection

Be strong and courageous." This encouragement from God is one that we should always be meditating on and clinging to. Our God is always with us. He isn't merely with us, but He purposefully walks through life with us. He desires a deep, personal relationship with His children, to always be available for them. And the final sentence of this verse is a comforting assurance. He will never fail us. He will never forsake us. He will continually be by our side, never leaving us to the world or giving up on us—despite our constant giving up on Him. So, trust in your God, and walk with Him confidently!

Reflection

In the sweet spot of living amid life's uncertainties coupled with practicing the promises God, hope springs forth. Hope which doesn't necessarily come from a change in circumstances, but in a change of heart. Because the hope of the Bible is a sure-to-happen, never-changing hope based upon God's character. We often use the word hope like the following: "I hope I get this raise" or "I hope we don't get sick". Whereas, the Bible uses the word hope to mean it WILL happen. There is always hope in waiting upon God and His Word. We look to the Giver before the gift.

Reflection

Isaiah is prophetically speaking about the Messiah to come in this passage. Later, in Luke 4:16-22, we read that Jesus spoke in the synagogue. He opened the scroll to this passage, read it, and said "Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing." Jesus is the person we read about in Isaiah 61. Jesus brings good news to those in trouble, He wraps His arms around those who are broken hearted, He sets the prisoners free, He liberates the captives. This is the gospel! Jesus saves, loves, rescues, and comforts.
