I. THE OCCASION.
A. After making intercession for the people and speaking to God for them.
B. Priest to return, to people and speak to them for God.
C. "Thus they were to put God's name on the people."
II. THE NAME "JEHOVAH."
A. Jewish reverence for name.
1. Would not write it in manuscripts - YHVH.
2. Would bathe and change clothes before.
3. We are in danger of losing something through familiarity.
B. Jehovah not name of essential Being "Elohim."
1. Moses before burning bush. "Who shall I say?"
a. "I AM -THAT I AM."
1. I say I am, no sooner said then passes into past tense I was.
C. Jehovah not name for all completeness or all sufficiency.
1. "El Shaddai."
a. Not just almighty.
b. All wisdom - resource - fount of all being.
D. Jehovah is a part of a verb that suggests the adaptation of His being to some necessity. The becoming.
1. Abraham with Isaac. Jehovah - Jireh.
Are you troubled? Turmoil? Jehovah-Shalom (peace.)
Are you weary? God becomes rest.
Are you weak? God becomes strength.
Are you sinful? Tsidxenu God becomes righteousness.
Are you sick? Raphu God becomes healer.
Are you lonely? Shammah, the Lord is there.
III. "JEHOVAH BLESS THEE AND KEEP THEE."
A. Bless - literally bend before you to serve you.
1. Christ in dark night of betrayal.
B. God bending before us to keep us.
1. Except the Lord keep the city.
2. Except the Lord keep me, my efforts vain.
IV. "JEHOVAH MAKE HIS FACE TO SHINE UPON THEE AND BE GRACIOUS UNTO THEE."
V. JEHOVAH LIFT UP HIS FACE UPON YOU AND GIVE YOU PEACE.
VI. "PUT MY NAME UPON THE CHILDREN."
A. To those who are not His children.- He is revealed.
1. God of judgment.
2. God of wrath.
B. The name Jesus - Greek for Joshua.
1. (lit. Jehovah is salvation.)
2. Shall call His name Jesus for He shall save.
We who have received salvation through Jesus.
Have realized the blessing and have been kept by Him.
His grace has overflown in our lives.
He is our peace.
