"WHAT THINK YE OF CHRIST?"
Intro: The Pharisees and the Sadducees had been trying to trap Jesus with trick questions. Jesus then asked them a question.
I. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE MESSIAH, WHOSE SON IS HE?
A. They were offended by Jesus' claim to be the Son of God. John 19:7.
1. When they had taken up stones. John 10:31.
2. To the present day, His claim of deity offends them.
a. They will tell you still that the Messiah will be a man as Moses.
b. They do not understand the mystery of the God-head.
1. Timothy 3:16.
3. Ask them if He is a man, how is He to be recognized?
a. "He will build our Temple."
b. John 5:43 - "I came in My Father's..."
B. They answered, "The Son of David."
1. He is to be a man, not the Son of God.
2. Big problem, how could David by the Spirit call him Lord?
a. The father never addressed the son as Lord.
b. Strong patriarchal society, son always bowed to father.
C. This should not stumble them.
1. Psalm 2:7, "Thou art My Son, this day have..."
2. II Samuel 7:14, "I will be His Father, and He will be My Son."
3. Isaiah 9:6, "For unto us a Child is born..."
II. STILL THE FINAL QUESTION TODAY: WHAT DO YOU THINK OF JESUS CHRIST, WHOSE SON WAS HE?
A. Only one of two possibilities.
1. Some unnamed rascal in Nazareth.
2. Prophesy of Isaiah 7:14 fulfilled and a virgin conceived and bore a Son.
B. You cannot pass Christ off lightly.
1. If He is not the Son of God:
a. He is a hoax, liar, charlatan, deceiver.
b. He was not a great teacher, a good man.
2. If He is the Son of God:
a. And you refuse Him, you are sealing your own eternal destiny.
b. Everything He said is true, and to believe in Him is eternal life.
III. WHAT EVIDENCE DO WE HAVE?
