Israel at parting of the ways:
Behind:
Oppression of Egypt.
Wandering of Wilderness.
Monotony of Wilderness.
The keeping care of God.
Before:
Liberty of new land.
Settling into new homes.
Variety of new land.
The great unknown.
I. THE UNCERTAINTY OF THE FUTURE-"WE HAVE NOT PASSED THIS WAY HEREUNTOFORE."
A. The fascination of the unknown.
1. Explains why people consult spiritualists.
2. Explains interest in New Year.
a. In reality no new year or old year. Human almanacs & human calendars.
The nearer we live to God the less we care about times and seasons. We realize
that time is eternity.
3. Fascination born of two things.
a. Human nature that desires something new.
b. The desire for something better "we have not passed this way" - note of hope.
B. Fear of the unknown.
1. I do not know what forces I will face.
a. I know well the past - Israel knew the wilderness
b. Going in to conquer giants, but if I do not know their strength, how can I know if I can defeat them.
2. Value of uncertainty.
