I. "GLORIFY ME WITH THING OWN SELF."
A. The first petition was that the Father might glorify the Son, that the Son might glorify the Father.
1. He then just talked to the Father about different issues.
2. How that the Father had given all power to Him.
3. That He had the power to give eternal life to all that the Father had given to Him.
4. That eternal life came from knowing God and Jesus Christ whom He had sent.
5. He had glorified the Father on the earth.
6. He finished the work that the Father had given Him to do.
B. He now returns to the original petition, that of glorifying the Son.
1. He is asking that He be glorified together with the Father.
a. That is to be put on a par with the Father.
b. Is this too much to be asking for?
c. For you or me, yes, it would be blasphemy.
d. This is the very thing that brought the downfall of Satan. "I will be like the most High."
II. HE IS JUST ASKING FOR THE GLORY THAT HE HAD WITH THE FATHER, BEFORE THE WORLDS EVER CAME INTO EXISTENCE.
A.
Phil. 2: "Who being in the form of God and thought it not robbery to be equal with God. But made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of man. And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross."
C.
Col 1:15-19: "Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by Him were all things created that are in heaven and earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones or dominions or principalities or powers: all things were created by Him and for Him, and He is before all things and by Him all things consist. And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He might have the preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in Him should all things dwell."
D.
1Cr 1:24: "Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God."
E.
Pro 8:22: "The Lord possessed Me in the beginning of His way, before His works of old. I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or before the earth was. When there were no depths, I was brought forth, when there were no fountains abounding with water. Before the mountains were settled before the hills was I brought forth. While as yet, He had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world. Then I was by Him, as one brought up with Him, and I was daily His delight rejoicing always before Him."
F.
Jhn 1:1: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
G.
1Jo 1:1: "That which was from the beginning which we have heard which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled of the Word of life, for the life was manifested and we have seen it and bear witness and show unto you that eternal life which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us."
III. DID THE FATHER ANSWER THIS PRAYER?
A.
1Pe 3:22: "Who is gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God; angels, authorities and powers being made subject unto Him.
B.
Eph 1:20: "Which He wrought in Christ when He raised Him from the dead, and set Him at His own right hand in the heavenly places. Far above all principality and power, and might and dominion, and every name that is named not only in this world but also in the world to come. And hath put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be the head over all things unto the church, which is His body the fullness of Him that filleth all in all."
C. "Now of the things that we have said, this is the sum, we have such a high priest who is set at the right hand of the throne of the majesty in heaven.
E. The sad and tragic thing today is that there are many men in pulpits around the country today seeking glory for themselves.
a. God forbid that I should glory save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.
b.
1Cr 1:29, "That no flesh should glory in His presence."
c. We do well to seek the glory of our Savior and the abasement of ourselves.
d. Let us always be, "O wretched man that I am."
e. That is me at my best, apart from Jesus Christ. In Christ I am a child of God, if a child, then an heir, and heir of God and a joint heir with Jesus Christ. But that is a gift that has been given to me. If it is a gift, then it is not of myself.
