"THE COMING PRINCE"
Intro: In the scriptures God's people are often referred to as a flock of sheep - Our tendency to herd - our dependence upon the shepherd - our need of guidance and protection.
I. GOD'S WORD TO THE EVIL SHEPHERDS.
A. More concerned for their own welfare.
1. They feed and clothe themselves but not the flock.
2. Their chief concern is not the flock.
a. They did not strengthen the diseased.
b. They sought not to heal the sick.
c. They did not bind up the broken.
d. They did not bring back the sheep that were driven away.
e. They did not seek the lost sheep.
f. They ruled with force and cruelty.
B. The tragic results.
1. The sheep wandered - became scattered.
2. They became a prey for the wild beasts.
3. The flock was destroyed.
C. "I am against the shepherds."
1. He will take His flock from them.
D. The primary applications to nation Israel.
1. It also applies to the church.
a. The word pastor is shepherd.
1. The chief duty is to feed the flock.
2. To love the flock and tenderly care for its needs.
II. GOD'S PROMISE TO THE SCATTERED SHEEP.
A. That He will search for them and seek them.
1. That He would bring them back from the countries where they had been scattered.
2. That He would place them again in their land.
3. That He would begin to shepherd over them.
4. That He would punish the nations that had scattered and torn them.
B. He then promises them a new Shepherd.
1. One shepherd over them.
a. No more are they to be a divided people.
2. My servant David.
a. David was a shepherd before he was a King.
b. He had the heart of the true shepherd.
c. God promised Him that his seed would sit on the throne forever.
d. The Messiah was to be -
1. The Lion of the tribe of Judah.
Rev. 5:5
3. Jesus said: "I am the Good Shepherd."
a. He desires for you to become a part of His flock.
b. He promises to:
1. Provide for you.
2. Genuinely care for you.
III. THE PROPHETIC SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS PASSAGE.
A. God has gathered the nation Israel - He has returned them to their land.
B. We now wait for the Good Shepherd to come and take over the flock of God.
Ps. 102:16-1...When "the Lord shall build up Zion..."
