Intro: Nathan's message too much. He felt emotions he could not express. He went while in this state of extacy to the place of nearness to God. "He sat before the Lord" and worshipped. Meditate upon Grace, go where David cannot go. David understood the words of Nathan to refer to the Christ. Acts 2:29. David was overwhelmed.
I. THE HUMILITY OF DAVID'S WORDS "WHO AM I, WHAT IS MY HOUSE?"
A. Owned lowliness or origin.
1. He came not from royal blood, "I took thee from the sheepcote."
a. Humble shepherd when anointed.
b. Leader of motley band.
2. What of our origin? Came from race of rebels.
B. Laid stress on personal unworthiness, "Who am I?"
1. Might we not say the same? Who am I? What is there in me?
2. David looked at his undeservings, Ps. 25. "Remember not the sins of my youth." Madness - anger at Nabal.
C. "I, O Lord go" His own nothingness next to God.
D. Nothing humbles a man like the mercy of God.
1. Unkind remarks or severe criticism does not humble a man but gender pride.
II. DAVID'S WONDERING GRATITUDE.
A. He wondered at what God had done. "What is my house?" that I should be the ancestor of Christ?
1. Muse on what God has done for you. Praise Him for justification, sanctification, preservation.
B. What God had promised.
1. "Spoken of thy servants for a great while to come."
2. What God has spoken for our future.
C. The manner in which He gave it all.
1. Free grace "And is this the manner of men?"
III. DAVID'S EMOTION OF LOVE.
A. Shame to have to speak be still and have you feel what I feel.
1. "What can David say more?"
a. Paul "what shall we say to these things?"
2. No eloquence can match the silence.
3. "Lord thow knowest all things thou knowest."
IV. DAVID'S HEART FULL OF PRAISE.
A. Praise for freeness of Grace. "For thy words sake thou hast done all these things."
1. Why does God love you? Because He loves you.
2. Self contained love.
B. Praised the faithfulness of God. "For thy Word's sake."
C. Praised for the greatness of the covenant blessings. "These great things."
