I. "WHOEVER IS BORN OF GOD."
A. Jesus said to Nicodemus, that to enter the kingdom of heaven he would have to be born again. He spoke of being born of the Spirit.
1. That which was born of the flesh was flesh.
2. That which was born of the Spirit was spirit.
3. We must have a spiritual birth.
B. By being born of God, I become a son of God.
1. We read in John 1,
JOH 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name:
JOH 1:13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
2. Beloved, now are we the sons of God.
C. How do we become sons of God?
1. That is basically what Nicodemus asked? Jesus answered, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him, should not perish but have everlasting life."
2. To as many as received Him, (i.e. Jesus) to them gave He the power to become the sons of God, even to those who believed on His name.
3. 1PE 1:23: Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth forever.
4. GAL 3:26: For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
D. What are the proofs that we are sons of God; that I have been truly born again?
1. Whoever is born of God does not live in sin.
1JO 5:18 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.
2. He is living a righteous life.
1JO 2:29 If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.
3. His life is marked by love.
1JO 4:7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
4. He believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
1JO 5:1 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.
5. He lives an overcoming life.
1JO 5:4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, [even] our faith.
6. He is led by the Spirit. "But as many as are led by the Spirit they are the sons of God." Rom. 8:14.
II. HOW ARE WE KEPT FROM LIVING IN SIN? "FOR HIS SEED REMAINETH IN HIM."
A. His seed is His word.
1. Peter told us that we were born again not with corruptible seed but incorruptible seed which he defined as the word of God that lives and abides forever.
a. Jesus said that heaven and earth would pass away, but His word would abide forever.
2. James tells us,
JAM 1:18 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
3. In the parable of the sower Jesus speaks of the seed falling on various types of soil. In His explanation of the parable He told the disciples, that the seed was the word.
B. The word of God in our hearts is our greatest defense against sin.
1. The psamist said,
PSA 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
2. Jesus said, "Now you are clean through the word that I have spoken unto you."
3. Again the psalmist asked, "How can a young man cleanse his way? He answered his own question, "By taking heed to Thy word."
PSA 119:101 I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word.
PSA 119:104 Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way.
4. Jesus used the word to withstand every temptation of Satan.
III. "HE CANNOT LIVE IN SIN BECAUSE HE IS BORN OF GOD."
A. Being born of God is totally incompatible with living in sin.
2CO 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
2CO 6:15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?
2CO 6:16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in [them]; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
2CO 6:17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean [thing]; and I will receive you,
2CO 6:18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
2CO 7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
B. We cannot be born of God and continue to live as we once did.
EPH 4:17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,
EPH 4:18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:
EPH 4:19 Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.
EPH 4:20 But ye have not so learned Christ;
C. We cannot be born of God and continue to live after the flesh.
EPH 5:1 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;
EPH 5:2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.
EPH 5:3 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;
EPH 5:4 Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.
EPH 5:5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
EPH 5:6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.
EPH 5:7 Be not ye therefore partakers with them.
EPH 5:8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now [are ye] light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
EPH 5:9 (For the fruit of the Spirit [is] in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)
D. You cannot be born of God and continue to have friendship with the world.
JAM 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
E. We cannot be born of God and live in the flesh.
1PE 4:2 That he no longer should live the rest of [his] time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.
1PE 4:3 For the time past of [our] life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:
1PE 4:4 Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with [them] to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of [you]:
F. When you are born of the God you receive a new nature.
1. We no longer excuse ourselves because of the Adamic nature.
2. "If any man be in Christ Jesus, he is a new creation, the old things have passed away and behold all things become new."
