My Father’s Glory
“Ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit.” - John 15:7-8
Read:John 15:6-8
Embellish the Story:Luke 12:32; 2 Corinthians 3:4-6; 1 John 3:1
If we remain in Jesus — spending time with him, lingering with him, thinking about him — we will know him better and better, his Words will be increasingly commonsense to us, and we will begin to ask for things accordingly. We will see the places needing to be filled with his love; we will sense where some gentleness or lavishness would be a welcome reprieve.
A Vinedresser’s Creed
Matching species to climate, and terrain to vine’s need
Of air circulation — morning’s dew must be freed.
To grow without mildew, disease or rot,
You must be placed thoughtfully; resist it not.
The vine is hardy, though needs an eye to detail.
A knowing hand pinches back, that its vigor prevails
In sweet, bursting fruit, not trails of rambling stalk.
For the vinedresser’s pursuit, daily he walks.
He knows each branch, each leaf, each grape bunch;
He tends them with wisdom, not on a hunch.
Intimate knowledge paired with infinite pride
In the branches He tends — His love, His bride.
And it will be God’s pleasure to do such things, to give such evidences of his kingdom (Luke 12:32). We will become competent in ministering in his Spirit (2 Corinthians 3:6), in tending to his people and making requests of his love. Whatever we ask, he will give us; because the things we want will be the things God wants, showing his glory (John 15:7-8). That is, when he does what we ask it will give tangible evidence of him — more of him, increasing and filling.
Prayer: Lord, this seems like a fantastic promise, lavish in its confident declaration (2 Corinthians 3:4; 1 John 3:1). Whatever I wish will be done? Yet this confidence comes from you. Because of you, I know my Father so well as to ask for his glory, knowing his love is the best, as is a vinedresser’s love, tender and personal care.
The Blue Letter Bible ministry and the BLB Institute hold to the historical, conservative Christian faith, which includes a firm belief in the inerrancy of Scripture. Since the text and audio content provided by BLB represent a range of evangelical traditions, all of the ideas and principles conveyed in the resource materials are not necessarily affirmed, in total, by this ministry.
