Outline:

  1. Rom 7:1-6
    1. Those under the Law are released from that position by sharing in the death of Christ
    2. Joined to a risen Christ – they bear fruit
    3. Released from Law – they give glad and willing service
  2. Rom 7:7-25
    1. Description of the struggle of seeking to compel the flesh to obey God’s Law – the result is utter despair
    2. The new view – victory in Christ!

Purpose:

To help the willing believer cast himself into the depths of grace

Analysis:

  1. Know Ye Not? The Law Dominates a Man as Long as He Is Living
  2. The Law – of Moses
    1. Attitudes toward the Law
      1. The Legalist – is under the Law and fears
      2. The Libertine – rejects the Law and hates
      3. The Believer – preserves the balance and loves
        1. Recognizes inability to keep Law – Law cannot save
        2. Seeks to obey God’s will by indwelling power of Christ
    2. The Marriage Law
      1. The binding character of the Marriage Law – Rom 7:2a
      2. The duration of bond – “So long as he lives” – Rom 7:2b
      3. The dissolution of Marriage Law, “If the husband dies” – Rom 7:2b
    3. The Application
      1. The first husband is the Law
      2. When Christ died the Law died with Him – Col 2:13-17
      3. We became free to live in eternal union with Christ
    4. The principles applied to the spiritual life – Rom 7:4-6
      1. Death experienced – Rom 7:4a
      2. Relationship expected, “Joined to Christ” – Rom 7:4b
      3. New life begun, “Bring forth fruit unto God” – Rom 7:4c
      4. New freedom experienced – Rom 7:6
        1. The time – “now”
        2. The extent – “delivered from the law”
        3. The method – “being dead”
        4. The purpose – “that we should serve”
          1. Negative – “not in oldness of law” Rom 7:6
          2. Positive – “but in newness of spirit” Rom 7:6
