Sermon Outline for Romans 6:1-14

1. Review
   1. Know our position – Rom 6:1-10
      1. Justified by faith
         1. By grace
         2. Through Christ
      2. United with Christ
         1. In His death
            1. Our old man is crucified
            2. Our old position in Adam is dead
         2. In His resurrection
            1. We are risen with Him
            2. We live a new life
               1. Dead to the rule of sin
               2. Alive to the reign of grace
   2. Reckon our position to be true
      1. Believe God’s Word as truth
      2. Live accordingly
2. Do Not Yield to Sin, but Yield to God – Rom 6:12
   1. The believer’s relationship to sin
      1. Sin will rule our – body mortal
         1. Sin remains in the body
         2. Sin is not eradicated
         3. Sin will rule
            1. Sin seeks to dominate
            2. Sin turns natural inclinations into selfish lusts
      2. We are not to allow sin to rule
   2. The believer and sanctification
      1. This is a doctrine we practice
      2. Sanctification is not a deliverance once and forever
      3. Sanctification requires active participation
      4. Sanctification is an exhortation
         1. Do not allow sin to rule – Rom 6:12
         2. Do not steal – Eph 4
         3. Do not lie – Eph 4
         4. Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera
      5. Parenthetical question: How does this reconcile grace apart from works?
         1. It is God doing it through us – Phl 2:13
         2. God’s way of working is through our participation, according to Rom 6:12
         3. We do it – but God enables us
   3. The practical outworking
      1. Understand – know the doctrine
      2. Realize – reckon the truth of it
      3. Yield to it – the application
         1. “In the light of this truth what kind of person must I be?”
         2. What is my position now?
         3. What is my motivation to apply Rom 6:12
            1. Not a reaction against my guilt
            2. Not a desire to be happy
            3. Not to try to be a Christian
            4. Not because we are afraid of Hell
            5. The motivation is positive
               1. I know what Christ has done for me
               2. I know my new position
               3. I know God’s purpose in me – 1Th 4:3
                  1. To undo the work of sin
                  2. To conform me to Christ
               4. I know God’s honor is involved in the matter of my behavior
               5. I do not want to disgrace my Lord – 2Ti 2:19
               6. Therefore, I do not allow sin to rule
               7. If I allow sin to rule in my body it is a denial of everything I claim in Christ
      4. The exhortation is possible for us to fulfill
         1. God is not saying this to a natural man
         2. This is written to us who believe
            1. We are dead to Adam
            2. We are alive to God
               1. We are not alone
               2. We have adequate resources
            3. We are to exercise resistance
         3. This is addressed to our will
