Sermon Outline for Romans 5:9-10

The “Much More” Care of God – “Blessed Assurance”

  1. Question – “Can We Really Be Sure?”
    1. Are we really saved from the wrath to come? – Rom 2:5; Rom 5:9
  2. Salvation
    1. Past – from the penalty of sin
    2. Present – from the power of sin
    3. Future – from the presence of sin
  3. The Basis of Assurance
    1. Justification
      1. Forgiven
      2. Declared righteous
      3. Gives us the righteousness of Christ
      4. Justified by grace – Rom 3:24
      5. Justified by faith – Rom 5:1
        1. The channel
      6. Justified by His blood – Rom 5:9
        1. The crucial – focal point
      7. Justified by His death
        1. The real answer!
      8. The Positive
        1. The essential element of our justification is what happened on the cross
        2. It is His blood – His death – His righteousness
        3. God justifies the ungodly, while we are still ungodly, entirely by the righteousness of Christ
      9. The negative view
        1. We are justified by our sanctification
          1. By our works
          2. By our progress
          3. By our performance
          4. Our responses
    2. The “much more” assurance – Rom 5:9-10
      1. Since God saved us when we were enemies, now that we are His – He will much more deliver us from future wrath
      2. We are safe from the wrath to come
    3. The Reconciliation
      1. From a state of war – enemies
      2. To a changed relationship – reconciled to God
      3. The argument: Since, while you were an enemy God sent His Son to die for you and now regards you as His child is He going to change? No!
      4. The wrath of God is no longer upon us
      5. The basis – the death of His Son
        1. We are totally dependent upon that death for any relationship to God
    4. The “much more” – we shall be saved by His life
      1. Saved – full – final – complete
      2. The difficult part of salvation is justification

      3. We shall be saved in His life
        1. We were outside of Christ
        2. Now we are in Christ
      4. The truth presented – since God sent His Son to die for us while we were outside as enemies, how “much more” will He do for us now that we are inside as His own family?
      5. The ministry of His present life
        1. He is alive
        2. He is great high priest
        3. He is advocate
        4. He is mediator
        5. He is intercessor
        6. He is our life
        7. Jde 24-25
  4. The Result – “Joy in God” – Rom 5:11
    1. Rejoice in God Himself – now
  5. The Application
    1. Reasons for failure to rejoice
      1. Not believing the truth of justification by faith only
      2. The “finished” aspect
    2. Attempting to glory in God and self, still clinging in part to our own works of self-merit
    3. Looking too much at self and problems and failure and sinfulness – too introspective
    4. Failure to meditate as we should – take time in the Scripture
    5. Resting too much on our feelings
      1. Faith is the connector
      2. Faith in the revelation
