         1. Meaning – Heb 9:5
         2. The tabernacle – the mercy seat
         3. Purpose – the way of making atonement for the sins of the people
         4. The steps
            1. High Priest entered Holy of Holies
            2. Carried blood of sacrifice
            3. Offered blood to God
            4. God accepted it
            5. Sins were forgiven
         5. The mercy seat represented the presence of God
            1. The meeting place between God and man

            1. Means death

         5. The purpose of the sacrifice
            1. To propitiate God
               1. Directed toward God
               2. Made to affect God
            2. Propitiation was secured by the canceling
            3. Propitiation was affected by the vicarious punishment of the victim substituted for the offender
               1. Sinner transferred sin to the animal
               2. The animal was slain
               3. The animal was a vicarious sufferer
               4. The animal bears the punishment
               5. The sinner substitutes the animal for himself
