Don Stewart :: Can Anyone Be Certain They Are Going to Heaven?

Don Stewart
The Word of God teaches that there is an eternal God who exists, He is not subject to time. Human beings, on the other hand, are subject to time. Each of us is limited to a few short years here upon the earth.

Must Choose

While we are here upon the earth we must choose whom we will serve. We can either believe the promises of the living God or reject those promises. Choice brings consequences. The choices we make in time determine where we will spend eternity.

We Can Know!

The Bible says that we can know that we will go to heaven when we die.

The one who has the Son has life; the one who does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life (1 John 5:12,13).

Eternal life is something that belongs to believers only. Though unbelievers will exist for eternity, they do not have eternal life. They are in a state of eternal separation, or eternal death.

Already Have

The possession of eternal life is something believers presently possess. Jesus said.

Very truly, I tell you, anyone who hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life, and does not come under judgment, but has passed from death to life (John 5:24).

Knowing A Person

According to the Bible, eternal life is a relationship with a person - Jesus Christ.

And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent (John 17:3)

This eternal life began the moment one enters into a relationship with Christ.

Paul

Paul said he knew in whom he had believed.

That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him for that day (2 Timothy 1:12).

Summary

The good news is that we can know that we have eternal life. Trusting Christ as Savior provides the assurance that life everlasting is ours. As soon as we make the decision for Christ as our Savior, we have eternal life. This is the promise of God's Word.
